Why is there a "bullpen" in baseball?

Re-read the post (if you even bothered in the first place). I'm not saying there shouldn't be a bullpen. I'm wondering why it has to be out beyond the field of play, detached from everything that is going on in the game.

OK then, explain the need for having an actual bullpen -- and not the one out in the OF, but having one close to the field of play like in the old parks, with players either right there with the action or even in the dugout with the rest of the team.

Like they do in San Fran you mean? Why have a bullpen on the field when it could interfere with play? I get your point but my point is that you made this thread over your frustration with relief pitching. Remember - at least 90% of these guys are guys who couldn't cut it as starters.
