Ganchrow one of the smarter math guys around still got buried I would imagine.
I used to take bets from MiT guys, Harvard guys, Brown guys (obviously) and a lot of guys who have a lot more brains than the average guy. They all lost.

Overconfidence is what kills the math guys. Sometimes you just have to sit back and say that on this particular day this team will beat that team. You watch lots of film and you just know!

Was thinking the same thing. I would be shocked if Ganchrow still didn't do his modeling, etc., and then make the bets that they pointed out.

I always figured it was these types of guys setting the lines to begin with which would explain why the lines are so hard to beat.

You can know very little about math and succeed in sports betting
Just need to know what lines to trust and what lines to hammer.
You can look at Pinny lines and lean on square books and make easy money. Ive been doing it for years.
Stick to props and other small markets and you cant lose. Get an edge and fkn pound it

Thats what I tell these guys. EVERYTHING related to math is known, at least in regards as to how it can be applied to sports betting. So to think you could come up with some plan or angle that books dont already know is laughable.
Even the so called wong teasers, they were known about but no one bet them with any regularity. He just wrote a book that highlighted that teasing around 'key numbers' was a very good strategy, any fool already knew that anyway. BUT what it did do was get a bunch of clowns hammering teasers, and thus books found a way to raise vig on them and used that as the excuse. There isnt anything wrong with a +100 teaser as far as the books are concerned, but if you can charge -120 and even -130 and people will still play them then why not? Nothing wong did was all that smart (except sucker people into hammering teasers thus causing the price decrease), nor was anything the books did 'wrong'. Although charging -120 for a teaser is criminal. But some very good and solid books will give -110 on teasers. When some books grade a tie as a loss then it is time to leave that book. Because that goes beyond math.
The one 'positive' that came from it however was books shaded their lines and got away from the numbers that would make guys looking to bet wong teasers attractive. Again nothing mathematical as the books know that with the vig they can manipulate now it all evens out. -110/-110 is not the norm, not even in vegas anymore. So they use math to counter act a so called math move.
'math' guy isnt even really the right term anymore. because most math guys dont have any concept of math. Theyre more correctly 'market' guys or 'value' guys, Guys who think they know what the 'value' of X or X.5 is in terms of vig. They like to speculate what -7 is compared to -6.5. or any number versus its half point counterpart. when in the grand scheme it isnt nearly what they think it is, and it damn sure isnt what books charge for it.
So once again these so called market, value, math guys get screwed by the books that are already smarter than they are. Best thing books did was allow that little drop down menu and let people buy and sell half points. They broke a lot of guys with that because most guys arent smart enough t realize if you know what youre doing youre going to get all that for free at some point. But unfortunately for them theyre too smart to listen to anyone else.

I don't normally give a rats ass about 2 people arguing...(I never was a fan of daytime talk shows) but when it's 2 people that I both consider intelligent... I love hearing both sides. I hope this can continue as a friendly debate between wantitall4moi and MonkeyF0cker? I'm just hoping to learn something.

My guy allows me to buy 1/2 points for an extra dime. Buffalo +2- at -110 becomes Buffalo +3 at -120. I always buy the extra half point on underdogs I like at +2- to +3, and at +6- to +7. I oftentimes buy a -3- favorite down to -3 and occasionally a -7- down to -7. I'm not sure that statistics back me up, but for whatever reason it's always worked for me. Beyond that, the main place where math helps me is in managing my bankroll......the discipline of limiting myself to a max bet of 3% of my bankroll, not chasing, and not going full tilt. Bad runs are inevitable. Lose the battle, not the war. Any profit is a good profit.

I think these are the only sharp posts in the thread.
The only reason for a guy not to go tout or go bookie if he's sharp as Ganchrow would be if he feels some kind of moral compulsion to "stick it to the house". He does not have to deal with all the legal/extralegal hassles of being on the player side. They must have made him an offer sweet enough to hang it up.
Walter forgot... when you're desperate's when you got no choice.

If this is true, why do books limit guys or ban them outright for being "sharp"?
