#1 Atitlan - One of two newcomers for John Sadler, and almost certainly the less-preferred of that pair. He's got a very turf route-leaning pedigree, and seems to be in here just to get the experience.
#2 Eagles Flight - Sadler's other runner, and a half to none other than superstar Flightline. His dam missed by a head in her Saratoga unveiling, and his Horse of the Year half-brother of course took his debut by 13 1/4 length with a ridiculous 105 Beyer Speed Figure. One other sibling was was third first out in a turf sprint. This colt's work pattern looks extremely lively on paper, and a bunch of his works are on XBTV. It's safe to say he's extremely talented. One of the horses he easily outworked in the morning was 3x winner Anywho. He's not unbeatable by any means, but he will take some beating.
#3 Visceral - He's really come on in his recent works, and has a right to be any kind. Of course, you never quite know what you're going to get with a firster, and we'll have to keep our fingers crossed that he acts as professional on Monday afternoon as he has in those big morning breezes. We're expecting him to flash big speed and hopefully be in front from the get-go. The Glatt barn is 3-for-6 this year with dirt sprint firsters, and would have four wins if not for a recent DQ for interference.
#4 Le Mans - Bob Baffert's first of two. Did no running in a turf route first up, and couldn't have been flashing too much talent to have been unveiled in that spot. Baffert did make a similar move with eventual GSP Coach Prime, but this isn't his MO.
#5 Fight With Honor - 4-year-old showed brief speed to chase out wide at 119-1 in his first go, ultimately checking in eighth behind the re-opposing Santarena. Things shouldn't get any easier for him here.
#6 Tour Player - Another Baffert going route to sprint and turf to dirt. Has also been well beaten by Santarena before. You can never totally rule out Baffert, but just don't think either of his two are high on the barn's depth chart.
#7 Corso's Pick - Finished last in a race several of these exit. Would need a complete and improbable turnaround.
#8 Santarena - Owns some strong established form, with two seconds and a 93 Beyer top, but he's starting to look like one who tends to always find one better. Would be absolutely no surprise, but guessing that Eagles Flight and/or Visceral will prove better.
#9 Thunder Ball - Showed very little in three turf tries last year. Resurfaces with blinkers on and Lasix added, but it remains to be seen if those changes will be enough.
#10 Sully - $700K 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo earned a pretty good number when third in January of 2023, but went missing for over a year until resurfacing last month to check in fifth in an allowance behind a streaking winner. Returns to maiden company and has four sharp works on display since the return, so maybe he'll finally realize his past promise.Comment -

Visceral ran 4th.. broke well couldn't keep his position on the turn... checked back behind horses and rallied back. He galloped out well pass the wire looking forward to his next one!

Sorry for the delay.
Let's start with World Record.
An excellent performance starting with having to stand in the gate with the 1 post for over 4 minutes. And while that is exactly what you do in the mornings, doing it in the afternoon is completely different. Kudos to the horse, rider, handler, and connections for handling that like a pro.
Once he broke, the race was pretty much over. An impressive performance to say the least.
My biggest thing to show everyone is how the horse was at the finish for his first start and then this race.
In his first start, he was forced to deal with a multitude of things for the very first time. The race was 6F. and I recall saying he was a tired horse the last 50 yards. And he clearly was. Fast forward to his 2nd race on Monday and he runs 7/8ths finishes with ease and gallops out like a real good horse. So how did he get so much fitter from race 1 to race 2?
He actually didn't get much fitter. Certainly some from that 1st effort, but not THAT much.
The difference was, he had no wasted energy in his 2nd race. In that 1st race, he was shocked by the dirt spray into the turn, had to mentally deal with that, found an opening with little spray, fired through it, and ran out of gas about 50 yds. out. It wasn't the physical energy he burned, it was all the mental energy he burned.
This sequence is a very cool learning tool for handicappers to tuck away for another time. And this is not something you learn while you are a groom or a foreman. You might recognize it as something, but until you train them and see it, it is very hard to put together. I would bet that the horse was not so much a drained tired horse after that 1st race, but more of a winded horse that was probably back to normal the next morning.
What I'm eluding to is that mental stress, and irregular stress and breathing is harder on a young race horse than handicappers realize. And yes, horses are not all the same so one situation does not necessarily apply to all of them.
But I found it very cool to see this horse be in front in very fast time, but under control and mentally comfortable and have the wherewithal to not look around and think but instead be listening to his rider for what was wanted next. It was a very professional race by a real nice horse. If he loses next out, it will take a quality horse to beat him.
This horse has a chance to be VERY nice. It is such a pleasure and really fun for me to see this years removed from racing. None of that would happen without being in here and talking with you folks.
It's great to have the opportunity to be able to explain what I see so you can use it to better see as well.
It's a win/win and I do appreciate it.

Visceral was fourth on debut today at Santa Anita. Click for the chart and replay.
It was an encouraging unveiling for sure and he has every right to step forward significantly from there, but it's fair to say we expected a bit better finish.
The grey looked great before the race and behaved well. He broke ok--but not the cleanest--and had to work pretty hard to move up into second down on the inside before jockey Diego Herrera took a hold of him. We probably would've preferred a more aggressive ride rather than have Visceral get bottled up and shuffled back the way he did entering the turn. He lost some momentum, and had to wait for clear running at the top of the lane. Meanwhile, favored firster Eagles Flight enjoyed an unencumbered trip out wide, as did formidable runner-up Santarena. Visceral eventually split horses and put in a run, but he was left with too much to do, and idled a bit late before galloping out very strongly.
See above for video of Visceral coming back after the race followed by comments from Diego. Diego did seem to think he broke better than he did, but overall he felt Visceral got a lot out of that race and should only improve with the experience under his belt. Note how much dirt Diego was covered in--taking all that kickback is always a new experience for a firster.
Mark felt similarly positive post-race. Since Visceral was so professional, he may consider cutting back or removing that extension blinker.
That was clearly a very strong group--particularly the top four finishers. Eagles Flight could very well be a superstar, and was given the prestigious 'TDN Rising Star' honors for his effort today. The next two finishers had strong, established form. With a cleaner journey and perhaps an outside post, we'd expect Visceral to be pretty tough next out and we remain very hopeful about his potential for a very nice career.
We'll see how he comes back (so far, so good) and go from there.

He never thought about the far turn so the ext. blinker did it's job. He must have given the trainer fits building up to the race to have to run in an extension blinker 1st out. That is rare to see, but no problems. As he progresses, your trainer might play with changing that outside cup around to get him cut back to a more typical blinker. I saw that it was mentioned in the post race write up. No trainer wants to do that with a baby and I give that trainer credit for doing what he had to do to get the horse right. Very well done.

So I see that Louisiana racing (NOT the Fairgrounds owned by Churchill Downs) is going to break away from HISA and join W.Va. in undoing any hope of keeping drugs from trying to ruin the game as well as horses and potentially riders, lives.
It is hard for me to believe that racing is so splintered that trainers find it reasonable to compete against other trainers that are obviously skirting the law. So they change the law back to make it easier for that to occur.
I thought maybe the jocks guild could have a say in that but I have been told that in this case they do not.
So that leaves one group that has much more power than they realize. The customers.
I've read for decades that the fans that attend wish they had some say in things. Funny thing is, they actually have ALL the say and just don't realize it. And that's exactly how the powers that be want to keep it.
I am not the guy who will say to boycott. No thanks. But each of you individually have a decision to make.
Is this blatant attempt to allow for looser drug rules something that you as a customer wants to see happen?
If so, then support it and bet there.
But if not, I suggest you take your hard earned money and put it to pleasurable use at any or all the tracks that are trying to do the right thing for fans, horses, jocks and everyone, except of course, those that feel the need to cheat to compete.Comment -
