I hope they do move to Hamilton
    Did anyone catch this story?

I don't know how you guys feel or not, but I'm all for Predators moving to Canada. Now that there is a salary cap implemented in the NHL, I think we will see a lot more of these small market U.S.A. based teams move back into Canada where pucks are really appreciated.

HAMILTON, Ontario (AP) -- Hamilton's city council approved an agreement Wednesday that would allow Copps Coliseum to become the Nashville Predators' home.

And a ticket drive was set to be launched Thursday to show support for the NHL team in southern Ontario. But it's being described as a "contingency plan" by a representative of the prospective buyer, BlackBerry billionaire Jim Balsillie, and the deal doesn't make Hamilton the exclusive destination for the team.

At a hastily called press conference at Hamilton's City Hall, Balsillie's lawyer, Richard Rodier, repeatedly stressed that there's still a lease in place in Nashville and the Hamilton agreement is a "contingency plan."

"The City of Hamilton has been kind enough to throw its hat in the ring," Rodier said. But when asked if the deal rules out Kitchener-Waterloo as a potential relocation site, Rodier said no.

"If a relocation application is put forward, the league would like us to look at all reasonable alternatives," Rodier said. "Our preliminary indication is that Hamilton would be ahead of the pack."

Hamilton mayor Fred Eisenberger is confident that the city has adequately protected its future prospects.

"The language in the agreement prevents us from being used as a tool to go somewhere else," Eisenberger said.

The council voted 15-1 in favor of extending a lease option to Balsillie if he is successful in purchasing the team and decides to relocate the franchise.

Balsillie, co-CEO of Waterloo-based Research in Motion, has reached a tentative agreement to purchase the Predators from Wisconsin businessman Craig Leipold. Balsillie submitted a formal purchase application to the NHL on Tuesday, but the sale of the team has to be approved by the league's board of governors.

Rodier said Balsillie's planned purchase of the team will not be put in front of the NHL's board for several months. Nashville's government argues that the Predators wouldn't be allowed to leave the city until 2009 at the earliest.

Leipold has until June 19 to exercise a clause in the team's arena lease that would force the city of Nashville to buy tickets and ensure attendance averages 14,000 next season.

Balsillie would have to sign a consent agreement with the NHL, including a clause that prevents a new owner from relocating the team for seven years. But an arena lease would have to be in effect to force the new owner to follow that league requirement. Averaging 14,000 paid attendance in 2007-08 would keep the lease in effect.

The terms of the sale call for the deal to be completed by June 30.

Balsillie withdrew an offer to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins in December because the league did not want him to relocate.

However, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has said that even if the sale of the Predators goes through, the franchise "is not going anywhere."

Bettman said he met with Balsillie in May and asked whether he had intentions to relocate the franchise.

"He told me that he did not," Bettman said before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals between Ottawa and Anaheim.

An NHL spokesman declined to comment Wednesday.

The Predators finished third in the league standings this season with a franchise-record 110 points but averaged 13,815 in paid attendance.

Associated Press Writer Kristin M. Hall in Nashville, Tenn., contributed to this report.

it will be great to have another team in Canada especially in Hamilton were the cities name has always come up for possible expansion. But for one reason that remains a mystery the NHL DOES NOT want a team up there and despite all the talk the last couple of days i doubt the team will go there.

Lets face facts here xxx... ESPN will never pay ridiculous amounts for a pucks contract at all, because it's not really all that popular in the stats. The need to start to focus on whats working, and expand off of that, and whats working is the big TV market and ticket sales in Canada.

Dan this story is big news up here in Ontario. And i believe that he will be successful in moving Nashville here. First of all, he's totally overpaying for the franchise, upwards of $220 million. (some reports even say as high as $240 million) Everyone knows that no hockey team is worth that much money except for maybe the Maple Leafs and that might even be a stretch. But Nashville is definately not worth that type of money, but by paying such a ridiculous amount he's increased the value of every single team in the NHL. How many owners are going to vote against this sale when by doing so, will decrease the value of their team by almost 100%? His one obstacle is Bettman. He's bound and determined to not let this happen, and has already succeeded one time by helping block the Penguins sale to this same businessman, but Pittsburgh has a hockey history and solid fan support. Nashville has neither. Bettman will have to pull out all the stops this time to prevent this sale from not getting approved.

I really hope this doesn't come to pass. An NHL team will not be a good fit in Hamilton as the corporate support simply doesn't exist. The ****'s major industry, steel, has been in decline for years and Stelco hasn't been the largest employer for several years now. The team would die a slow death and be gone within 3-4 years.

I would like to recommend Milwaukee, Winneprg or Quebec **** and far more suitable options.

Well they imploded Winnipeg arena last time I was in town and I watched it go. I'm not sure if their new downtown arena where the Moose' play is large enough for an NHL team.

You don't think they would build a new arena if they were to land an NHL team though?

Heres the implosion of the old arena in case you wanna relive it

That is a possibility but its very unlikely given local politics. Manitoba just elected another NDP provincial goverment and the NDP are usually not keen on putting money into sports and other such luxuries when there are pressing social problems.

In fact, during the election the opposing party made a pledge to bring back the Jets, and his fortunes turned for the worse. In retrospect, many pundits pointed to that as a critical mistake in his campaign. So I don't think there is an appetite for this in Winnipeg.

But I still would like it better if they got the franchise than Hamilton. Hamilton has been dicked around for years by every owner looking for some stadium deal or whatever. We are always used as a bargaining chip.
