The space-age pucks, which cost the NHL some $40 each to produce, will make their debut next week in the NHL’s 31 arenas, all part of the league unveiling its long-anticipated Puck and Player Tracking technology for use in broadcasts and, undoubtedly, the tidal wave of legalized betting about to wash over all pro sports.
But let’s save all the data and their various uses for a different day and focus on the puck’s grand makeover. It’s come a long, long way from days of old. Some of the late-19th-century versions were made of wood. The rubber iteration came along around 1900 when someone shaved off two sides of a ball, a puck emerging from the handiwork.

The American Hockey League will go ahead with 28 teams this season after announcing Monday that three have opted out of playing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Based on the information I was getting, I wasn't sure we were going to reach 28 teams even two weeks ago, but I think some of the teams got excited and found a way to make it work,'' AHL president and CEO Scott Howson said by phone. "It's a good day for the AHL, except for the three that can't participate and obviously we know their reasons and they're legitimate and they'll move on and plan for '21-22.''
The Charlotte Checkers, Milwaukee Admirals and Springfield Thunderbirds opted out and will return in 2021-22, the AHL said. Those teams are affiliates of the NHL 's Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues, respectively.

Longtime NHL forward Colin Wilson retires after 11 seasons

TORONTO (AP) — Colin Wilson, who played 11 seasons with the Colorado Rockies and Nashville Predators as part of a three-generation NHL family, announced his retirement Tuesday.
The 31-year-old forward played nine games for Colorado last season before having double hip surgery.
Wilson scored 113 goals and had 173 assists in 632 regular-season games. He added 17 goals and 16 assists in 65 playoff games.

“At this time, I am left to reflect on the 8-year-old kid from Winnipeg who couldn’t be dragged off a pond or outdoor rink. I can only imagine his excitement in learning of his career he would have in the NHL,” Wilson said in a statement released by the players’ union. “It is very bittersweet to retire as I leave my childhood passion behind but look forward to what comes next.”
Wilson played his final game on Oct. 26 for Colorado. A few days later, he detailed his long battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder in a post on The Players’ Tribune.
Picked seventh overall by Nashville in the 2008 draft, Wilson helped Boston University win the 2009 NCAA championship.
Wilson’s father, Carey, and grandfather, Jerry, also played in the NHL.

United States wins World Junior Championship with shutout against Canada

Panthers prospect Knight makes 34 saves; 2019 Ducks pick Zegras has goal, assist

The United States won the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship with a 2-0 victory against Canada at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Tuesday.

Spencer Knight (Florida Panthers) made 34 saves for his third shutout to set U.S. WJC career and single-tournament records.
"No one person can win a game on their own, and our whole team battled so hard," Knight said. "We battled so hard from start to finish, and every time we went into the locker room, we had so much new energy going and I was so proud of the guys. We stuck to our game plan, played hard, played selfless, and that's the key.
"… I played with so many of these guys for so long and we battled so hard, and it feels so good."
It was the first shutout by the United States in the semifinal round or championship game in its history.
Trevor Zegras (Anaheim Ducks) had a goal and an assist, and Alex Turcotte (Los Angeles Kings) scored for the United States, which won the WJC for the fifth time, four of those titles coming with a win against Canada in the championship game (also 2004, 2010, 2017).

NHL Tonight: Team USA Win's Gold

Devon Levi (Panthers) made 19 saves for Canada, which defeated Russia 4-3 in the 2020 championship game. Levi entered the game having allowed three goals on 118 shots in six straight wins, including consecutive shutouts against the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals and Russia in the semifinals.
Canada was hoping to become the first team to win back-to-back championships since it won the last of five straight in 2009.
Knight made the save against Connor McMichael (Washington Capitals) on a breakaway at 16:55 of the third period and on Connor Zary (Calgary Flames) on a wraparound at the right post less than a minute later.
"Going into the third, we have to believe we're going to tie the game," Canada forward Dylan Cozens (Buffalo Sabres) said. "We had our looks, and Knight played great, stopped lots of pucks, but we had our looks, just didn't get the bounces."
Turcotte gave the United States a 1-0 lead when he scored on a tip-in from the slot of a shot taken from the right point by Drew Helleson (Colorado Avalanche) at 13:25 into the first period. It was the first even-strength goal allowed by Canada and the first time the host country trailed in the tournament.
"We were sticking to what worked, being hard on their defense, being physical with them down low, and that was our game plan," Turcotte said. "I think we were really good on the forecheck, and that created a lot of space for us. We were getting greasy ones around the net, and it worked out."
Zegras made it 2-0 when he jammed the puck past an unsuspecting Levi at the left post 32 seconds into the second period.
Selected by Anaheim with the No. 9 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, Zegras led the tournament with 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in seven games.
"We have such a great team, it made my job so easy," he said. "I can pretty much give [the puck] to any of these guys, and it'll end up in the back of the net, so I really loved how we came together in such a short time and obviously it speaks for itself what we did."
Zegras ranks second on the U.S. all-time list for points in a single WJC (Doug Weight, 19 points, 1991) and second on the single-tournament assists list (Weight, 14, 1991). The 19-year-old also is tied for most career points (27, 12 games) with Jordan Schroeder (19 games, 2008-10) and career assists (Schroeder, 20).
Canada had 19 first-round NHL Draft picks on its roster, and the United States had nine.

Another pivot the league has made with the divisions: adding sponsorships to the names.
The NHL announced those sponsorships Tuesday. Here are the names of the four divisions in 2020-21:
                    • Scotia NHL® North Division
                    • Honda NHL® West Division
                    • Discover NHL® Central Division
                    • MassMutual NHL® East Division

Girgensons out for season for Sabres after hamstring surgery

Forward injured during scrimmage, expected to need six months to recover

                      NHL.com @NHLdotcom
Zemgus Girgensons is out for the season for the Buffalo Sabres after having hamstring surgery Wednesday.

Girgensons was injured during a scrimmage Monday and is expected to need six months to recover. He was helped off the ice after falling awkwardly trying to check teammate Steven Fogarty.
"We all can feel the hole that Zemgus leaves with his injury -- the character, the work ethic, the role that he has in our group is something that makes him unique," Sabres coach Ralph Krueger said. "I challenged the group today to chip in and to take a piece of that hole. We're going to keep Zemgus close, because how important he is in the organization, what a personality he is in the organization. We want to keep him close in the rehab and help him to get back."
Girgensons scored 19 points (12 goals, seven assists) in 69 games last season and led Sabres forwards in hits (110). The No. 14 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft has scored 138 points (61 goals, 77 assists) in 489 NHL games.
"You feel terrible for him," Sabres captain Jack Eichel said. "He's had a long offseason, as we all have ... he's a super important part of our team. So it's a big loss in our lineup but it's a big loss personalitywise, because he brings a lot to our group on and off the ice. So we're going miss him deeply. He'll have a good recovery and he'll be back before we know it. But, yeah, it's unfortunate that you lose him for as long as you do. You just feel for a guy like that that's put so much work in. It seems like it's taken away from him right before the season."
Krueger said the Sabres would need other players to step up defensively. Buffalo is scheduled to open the season Jan. 14 at home against the Washington Capitals.
"Kyle Okposo and the way he's embraced the principles that we are continuing to try to turn into habits -- we have new players that need to walk into that space -- is an amazing example of us on a daily basis that needs to be done," Krueger said. "It is that way that he is a leader both on and off the ice and somebody that really is exemplary in executing the team game for us regularly and consistently last year. You can see the pair with Tobias Rieder today (at practice) that we are confident that Toby could help be that kind of a player for us."

Carey Price's new mask is designed to transform the Montreal Canadiens goalie into a cyborg: part man, part machine, allowing him to channel various elements from the team's great goaltending history directly into his own brain.

Created by Calgary airbrush artist Jordon Bourgeault after Price reached out directly through social media, the "biomechanical skull" is a departure from Price's recent logo-heavy masks but is still loaded with Canadiens influences.

The Dallas Stars had six players and two staff members test positive for COVID-19, and the NHL expects the team will not open its 2020-21 season any earlier than Jan. 19.
Those who tested positive are self-isolating and following CDC and NHL protocols. The positive tests have forced the Stars to close their training facilities, and they will remain closed for several days while further daily testing and contact tracing is conducted.

Corey Crawford retires from NHL after 10-year career

Just one day after taking an indefinite leave of absence from the New Jersey Devils, goalie Corey Crawford announced his retirement from the NHL on Saturday.
Crawford said in a statement through the NHLPA that he wanted to continue his career but believes he has given all he can to the game and that it is time to retire.
“I have been fortunate to have had a long career playing professional hockey for a living,” said Crawford in the statement.

“I wanted to continue my career, but believe I’ve given all I can to the game of hockey, and I have decided that it is time to retire. I would like to thank the New Jersey Devils organization for understanding and supporting my decision. I would like to thank the Chicago Blackhawks organization for giving me the chance to live my childhood dream. I am proud to have been part of winning two Stanley Cups in Chicago. Thank you to all of my teammates and coaches throughout the years. Also, thank you to the fans who make this great game what it is. I am happy and excited to move on to the next chapter of my life with my family.”
This ends a 10-year career that saw Crawford win 260 regular season games and two Stanley Cups as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.

His time in Chicago came to an end following the 2019-20 season when he was not re-signed by the team, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent. It was there that he signed a two-year contract with the Devils where it was expected he would form a strong goalie duo with MacKenzie Blackwood.
During his time with the Blackhawks Crawford was consistently one of the league’s most underappreciated goalies and an often times overlooked member of that mini-dynasty run in Chicago.
Overall, he appeared in 488 regular season games with a 260-162-53 record, a .918 save percentage, and 26 shutouts.
In 96 playoff games he finished with a 52-42 record, five shutouts, and two Stanley Cups.

The Penguins canceled their training camp practices and scrimmage scheduled for Saturday.
They said the decision was made "out of an abundance of caution due to potential exposure of COVID-19" and information about their schedule Sunday would come at later time.

Devils screwed again, this time by the Crawford decision

previously, Ilya Kovalchuk stuck it to them

Interesting note on goalies this year. the NHL stipulated that teams must carry three goalies this season between their active roster and the taxi squad. If the third goalie is on the taxi squad, he'll be the only taxi squad player required to travel to all of the team's away games.

San Jose Sharks left winger Evander Kane has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to The Athletic's Daniel Kaplan.
Kane said in his filing he has liabilities totaling $26.8 million and assets of $10.2 million. The move comes four days after Centennial Bank filed an $8.3 million lawsuit against Kane and the Sharks over outstanding debt.

Zibanejad had COVID-19, uncertain for Rangers opener

Center took part in first full practice since positive test

by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer

Mika Zibanejad's status for the season opener is unclear after the New York Rangers center participated in a full practice Monday for the first time since testing positive for COVID-19 prior to training camp.

"I was out for a certain amount of days going through and sticking to protocol," said Zibanejad, who revealed the positive test Monday. "I've been skating on my own and now first real skate with the team. It felt good."
Zibanejad, who led the Rangers by scoring 41 goals in 57 games last season, remains day to day. He had been kept off the ice since New York opened training camp Jan. 4 before skating prior to practice five days later, and took part in an abbreviated morning skate Sunday but did not play in the intrasquad scrimmage at night. The Rangers have not confirmed that he will be in the lineup when they play the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.
The Rangers are off Tuesday and scheduled to practice for the final time in camp Wednesday.

"I feel good now, I felt good in practice," Zibanejad said. "I've been feeling pretty good for a certain amount of days now. We've been taking this day by day and following the protocol and listening to the (doctors) and everyone. We'll take it day by day. I don't know exactly what happens for Thursday but felt good today and we'll see how things are [Tuesday] and we'll just go from there."
Zibanejad will be on the top line with left wing Chris Kreider and right wing Pavel Buchnevich if he's able to play Thursday.
"This is really a day-to-day situation, you just don't know how you're going to respond," Rangers coach David Quinn said. "The good news is he's gotten better and better over the last four or five days once he was able to start some light activity. We're not sure what's going to happen tomorrow. We're not sure what's going to happen Wednesday or Thursday but talking to him after practice I think he felt pretty good about where he was at and how he felt."
Zibanejad led the NHL with 24 goals and 40 points in 25 games from Jan. 15 to the end of the 2019-20 regular season.

The NHL announced that 27 players had confirmed positive COVID-19 tests during training camps, which concluded Tuesday.
Of those players, 17 were members of the Dallas Stars, who shut down their training facilities last Friday after an outbreak. Dallas' first three games -- at Florida on Thursday and Friday and at Tampa Bay on Sunday -- have been postponed. The defending Western Conference champions are now tentatively set to open at the Lightning on Jan. 19 in a Stanley Cup Final rematch.

I think you're right I'm lucky I cashed my under ticket in the Tampa Bay game that one probably should have went over but thankfully they made it 6.5. Early in the season I may look to play team totals until things settle down. One thing for sure it'll be a sweat every night if you're betting unders.
