NFL Player News - Week of 8/24/20

Free-agent PK Nick Folk (Patriots) re-signed with the New England Patriots Monday, Aug. 24. Terms weren't disclosed.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill does minimal work
Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill (hamstring) did some stretching and conditioning in practice Monday, Aug. 24.

Chargers | Mike Williams week to week
Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (shoulder) is considered week to week with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. He's expected to be ready for the season opener.

Ravens | Lamar Jackson back at practice
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (groin) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 24.
Footballguys view: Jackson has missed the last two days of practice with a groin strain. The Ravens will likely take it easy on Jackon during Monday's practice.

Dolphins | Tua Tagovailoa not a lock to be the backup?
Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa is in a competition for the No. 2 quarterback job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick with Josh Rosen, and the 'chances are greater' that Rosen will begin the season in that role unless Tagovailoa 'suddenly starts doing some magical things he hasn't shown yet,' in the opinion of the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.
Footballguys view: Tagovailoa is supposed to be the franchise quarterback that the Dolphins have been searching for since the days of Dan Marino. Rosen is a former first-round pick who is on his second team in only a couple of years. Behind the scenes with the Dolphins last year, Rosen was known as a hard worker but when he stepped onto the field to start in 2019 it was met with disastrous results. Tagovailoa should have no problem beating out Rosen but it sounds like that's not a done deal just yet.

Bears | Chicago QB situation still murky
Chicago Bears QBs Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles appear to be no closer to answering the question regarding the identity of the team's starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.'It's not going to happen soon,' Matt Nagy said.
Footballguys view: Trubisky has looked better according to camp reports and his teammates like what he's showing on the practice field. However, Foles has been there and done that so his experience could just make him the better option in the long run. Do not be surprised if the Bears begin the season with one guy and then make a change somewhere along the way. It's a make-or-break year for Trubisky that is for sure.

Rams | Updates on Darrell Henderson, Taylor Rapp
Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Rams RB Darrell Henderson (hamstring) could miss a few practices with a mild hamstring strain, according to Steve Wyche of NFL Network. S Taylor Rapp (knee) could be back before the end of the week, according to Wyche, who added that neither player looks to be in jeopardy of missing Week 1.
Footballguys view: A few practices is different than the 'McVay hopes he's ready for Week 1' reports from earlier. Keep an eye on this Rams running back situation, and make sure to monitor the ADP of rookie Cam Akers -- the likely lead player in the Rams backfield.

Eagles | Jalen Reagor making a fan out of his QB
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jalen Reagor drew some praise last week when Carson Wentz observed that the rookie and Julio Jones share 'some similarities with how they run routes.''By no means am I saying this rookie is Julio Jones right now. Just the way that Jalen - his combination of speed and power - and just watching tape of Julio, I see some similarities with how they run routes,' Wentz told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Footballguys view: Reagor is a dangerous playmaker with the ball in his hands, and that's one of the reasons why Wentz should make him a preferred target. The rookie from TCU can score from anywhere on the field and he can make defenders look absolutely silly in the open field. Reagor has a current ADP of WR46 (10.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bears | Allen Robinson misses practice
Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson (ankle) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 23, but head coach Matt Nagy said he is not concerned about the injury.
Footballguys view: Robinson is one of the lone bright spots on the Bears roster. Regardless of who wins the QB job between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, Robinson will be a focal point of the passing attack. Robinson is a WR1 for fantasy and he's got a current ADP of WR10 (3.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Eagles | Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert on field Sunday
Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz (undisclosed) and TE Dallas Goedert (thumb) participated in practice Sunday, Aug. 23.
Footballguys view: The Eagles dynamic duo at tight end is a little banged up right now. They'll work to get as close to 100 percent as possible before the start of the regular season. Ertz is a TE1 for Fantasy GMs (as always) while Goedert has some 'what the heck' flex appeal in deeper leagues and is a helluva TE handcuff if your league is that deep.

Titans | Darrynton Evans misses practice
Tennessee Titans RB Darrynton Evans (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 23.

Browns | No practice for David Njoku
Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku (wrist) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 23.
Footballguys view: The watch for Harrison Bryant to overtake Njoku is on. The Browns might end up wishing they had dealt Njoku when his camp demanded it.

Bengals | A.J. Green does not practice
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (hamstring) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 23.
Footballguys view: At this point, it would be a win if Green practices before the end of camp. He will come at a discount from his pre-camp ADP, but his Week 1 status will be in doubt until we see him on the field again.

Jets | Denzel Mims still out
New York Jets WR Denzel Mims (hamstring) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 23.

Jets | No practice for Breshad Perriman
New York Jets WR Breshad Perriman (knee) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 23, because of a sore knee but is expected to take part in practice Monday, Aug. 24, according to head coach Adam Gase.

Rams | Darrell Henderson may be ready for Week 1 Sun Aug 23, 04:16 PM
Los Angeles Rams RB Darrell Henderson (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a low-grade hamstring strain and may be available for the start of the regular season, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Henderson still should drop some on boards as a second half of the draft flier and Cam Akers is now set to get the majority of the workload vs Dallas to open the season, with Malcolm Brown lurking at the goal line. If Henderson can get in a full practice in the week before the opener, then perhaps this will end up not changing his outlook, but we have to be cautious with hamstring injuries for speed players like Henderson.

Chargers | Shoulder injury for Mike Williams
Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (shoulder) left practice early Sunday, Aug. 23, because of a shoulder injury and is scheduled to undergo tests. The team did not find any problems with Williams' collarbone and hope that it is a minor injury.
Footballguys view: This is still something to monitor, but as long as the tests don't show damage to the shoulder, Williams will still be a worthy upside pick later in drafts because Tyrod Taylor actually throws a nice deep ball.

    Mike Williams player page

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk suffers injury
San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) left practice early Sunday, Aug. 23, after suffering an apparent hamstring injury.
Footballguys view: Aiyuk loses some appeal as a bench stash now unless this was a minor ding and he's practicing again before camp is over. The 49ers wide receiver group is a mess, so that makes George Kittle look better and better at ADP. Dante Pettis has a wider window to win redemption with Aiyuk ailing.

Patriots | Cam Newton receives most of work Sunday
New England Patriots QB Cam Newton received 30 repetitions during team drills Sunday, Aug. 23, while QB Brian Hoyer received 12 reps during 11-on-11 drills.
Footballguys view: Newton is pulling away in the quarterback competition and he's certainly worth a pick as your upside QB2, but he isn't drawing rave reviews for his practice performances and might have a slow start to the season.

Browns | Austin Hooper furthering bond with QB

49ers | Jordan Reed participates in first practice
San Francisco 49ers TE Jordan Reed participated in his first practice with his new team Tuesday, Aug. 25. 'We wanted to ease him back in today, give him a couple routes in one-on-one, give him a couple plays in team (drills) - not too much,' head coach Kyle Shanahan said. 'When you're not out for a while, you got to go out and get your first practice in, take that monkey off your back.'
Footballguys view: Reed has always had talent but he is one of the most oft-injured players in the NFL. He's got a fresh start with the 49ers after years in Washington. We'll see if he can stay healthy, impress and win a primary backup job to George Kittle.

Bengals | Joe Mixon dealing with migraines
Updating previous reports, Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon (migraines) has been absent from practice due to migraines, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Mixon is in contract negotiations with the team right now but he has been missing practice due to migraines. That should be cleared up before Week 1, but we'll have to see if Mixon can get a new deal before then. He is currently going off the board at RB9 (1.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Vikings | Jake Browning has work to do
Minnesota Vikings QB Jake Browning 'hasn't done enough' in training camp to challenge QB Sean Mannion for the backup spot, according to Arif Hasan of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Browning came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Washington in 2019. He has a history of shoulder problems and average arm strength. He's a game manager with a little more athleticism than some give him credit for. The Vikings did give him $140,000 guaranteed as a UDFA and kept him on the practice squad as a rookie, but he's not ready to be the backup just yet.

Vikings | Kirk Cousins rounding into form

Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins has 'dialed in his accuracy' over the course of training camp, according to Arif Hasan of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: Cousins is in a system he knows well (Shanahan/Kubiak) and works well from within the pocket or throwing on the run. His accuracy has never been a problem, so dial it in all he wants, Cousins needs to get better at winning. The Vikings have committed to him and have weapons around him. It's time for that to pay off with a deep playoff run.

Dolphins | Kalen Ballage to be released
Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage was told Wednesday, Aug. 26, he's being released, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Ballage is a big back who doesn't run like a big back. Instead, he's more nimble and tries to make defenders miss. That could work in college at Arizona State but that's not going to work in the NFL. Ballage could get some interest as a camp body or as depth on another roster.

Seahawks | Chris Carson expected to practice Friday
Updating a previous story, Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson returned to the team Wednesday, Aug. 26, and participated in warmups in full pads. He's expected to practice Friday, Aug. 28, when the team is next scheduled to practice.
Footballguys view: Carson has missed most practices this month due to multiple deaths in the family. He is healthy enough to practice and is the clear-cut lead back for the Seahawks. While he's been out, Carlos Hyde and DeeJay Dallas have been getting more work.

Seahawks | Phillip Dorsett dealing with prolonged foot issue
Seattle Seahawks WR Phillip Dorsett (foot) has been dealing with a foot issue for some time, according to head coach Pete Carroll Wednesday, Aug. 26. 'It might be the kind of situation we've got to monitor and see what it takes to keep him feeling good because he has had it for a while,' Carroll said.
Footballguys view: Dorsett has always had speed to his game but injuries and inconsistencies have hampered his production as a pro. The Seahawks know that he's dealt with this foot injury for some time so they'll work best to manage his usage.

Patriots | Cam Newton not feeling like starter
New England Patriots QB Cam Newton said Wednesday, Aug. 26, he 'absolutely' doesn't feel like the team's starter, despite taking the bulk of reps in training camp. 'I have so much I need to get better at, so much I need to learn, so much I need to be comfortable with. Throughout this process, that's the last thing that I'm pretty much worried about,' Newton said.
Footballguys view: Newton is likely to be the starter for the Patriots in Week 1. Frankly, we'd be a bit shocked if he wasn't. Newton is not getting ahead of himself and just putting in the work necessary to secure the position.

Seahawks | Carlos Hyde to be important piece
Seattle Seahawks RB Carlos Hyde will be 'a big factor' for the team in 2020, according to head coach Pete Carroll Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Footballguys view: Hyde has a productive track record in the NFL. He's got the power to beat up a defense and he's proven to be able to carry a large workload. Chris Carson is the team's starter but he's been banged up quite a bit as a pro. Perhaps the team could use Hyde a bit more to keep Carson fresh or give him a breather from time to time. We'll see how these two backs are used when the season kicks off.

Patriots | Sony Michel passes physical
Updating a previous story, New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (foot) passed his physical Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Footballguys view: Michel is back at practice for the Patriots and working to be their lead back. If healthy, Michel could get a starter's workload but the Patriots will still use other backs in a rotation. Damien Harris has been a standout player in training camp and could be a solid starter if Michel has to miss time. Perhaps the second-year pro will steal some snaps here and there away from Michel in 2020.

Seahawks | Paul Richardson at facility
Free-agent WR Paul Richardson (Washington Football Team) is at the Seattle Seahawks' facility Wednesday, Aug. 26, undergoing testing for COVID-19, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Richardson was a second-round pick for Seattle in the 2014 NFL draft and he played four seasons up in the Northwest. Injuries have held him back as a pro, both with Seattle and Washington, but Richardson can flat out fly when healthy. We'll see if Seattle brings back the veteran speedster.

Bengals | A.J. Green on the field Wednesday
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (hamstring) is on the field during practice Wednesday, Aug. 26, but appears to be a limited participant.
Footballguys view: Green is working his way back and the Bengals are wisely being cautious. We'll have to wait and see how he looks in Week 1 of the regular season but many reporters around the team speculate we could see the same old (great) Green in 2020.

Arizona Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Footballguys view: Drake was seen in a walking boot but it's just 'nicks and bruises' according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury. The veteran back said he's 'good' on social networking earlier this week and we'll see if he can get back to practice in the near future.

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (foot) participated in practice Saturday, Aug. 29.
Footballguys view: Coutee is one of those players we all know has talent but he's one of the most oft-injured wide receivers in the league. We'll see if he can stay healthy and impress.

Jets | Denzel Mims not on field
New York Jets WR Denzel Mims (hamstring) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 29.
Footballguys view: Mims has a nice size/speed combination when healthy. He had great 'my ball' mentality in college and should carry that over to the pros...when he's healthy and on the field. The rookie is looking to establish a spot on the pecking order behind Jamison Crowder and Breshad Perriman.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker remains sidelined
Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (undisclosed) did not participate in the team's scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 29.
Footballguys view: We'll see if the veteran can get back out there for whatever reason is holding him out at this time. Parker is going to be the lead receiver for the Dolphins has has WR2 potential for Fantasy GMs in 2020.

Bears | Chicago will not name QB before opener
Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles have been competing for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Matt Nagy said he will not name the starting quarterback before the start of the regular season.
Footballguys view: Fantasy GMs aren't dialed in on this situation for good reason. Instead, we are all focused on WR Allen Robinson. He's such a good receiver that he can perform no matter who is tossing him the rock. Robinson has a current ADP of WR10 (3.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Seahawks | Paul Richardson re-signs with Seattle
Free agent WR Paul Richardson (Washington Football Team) signed an undisclosed contract Saturday, Aug. 29, to return to the Seattle Seahawks.
Footballguys view: Richardson is back with the team that brought him into the league as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. He can fly down the field but injuries have robbed him of the production many thought he could have coming out of the University of Colorado. With speedy veteran Phillip Dorsett battling a constant foot issue, Richardson has a chance to win the no.3 job for the Seahawks behind Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf.

Colts | Trey Burton out with calf strain
Indianapolis Colts TE Trey Burton (calf) will miss some time with a calf strain, according to a source, who added the injury is not as serious as initially expected.
Footballguys view: Burton has been getting some buzz in deep leagues because he's reunited with Frank Reich this year. He had intriguing upside with the Eagles but failed to stay healthy or impress during his time with the Bears. Injuries have been a big issue for Burton in recent years and this calf injury is just another in a long line of problems. Jack Doyle is the Colts lead tight end and a TE2 for Fantasy GMs.

Football Team | Dontrelle Inman making move
Washington Football Team WR Dontrelle Inman appears to have overtaken rookie WR Antonio Gandy-Golden on the depth chart and has been seen playing with Terry McLaurin and Steven Sims in three-wide receiver sets in recent practices. 'Dontrelle's been a welcome addition,' head coach Ron Rivera said Saturday, Aug. 29.
Footballguys view: Gandy-Golden has size, he has talent but he's a raw prospect and facing a big jump in competition going from Liberty to the NFL. Inman is a savvy veteran who can pluck the ball. He's got the advantage now but if Gandy-Golden plays like he can then he'll overtake him at some time.
