I just read Sports by Brooks blog. I hear the Jox crew talk about this guy but I am not huge on the rumor starters. Most of this stuff seems legit. The problem with it is unfortunately its everywhere.

          SPRING QUARTERBACK BATTLES

ALABAMA: A.J. McCarron (SO), Phillip Sims (R-FR)
Predicted Winner: McCarron. Strong arm with more experience. Will be pushed by Sims who is the better athlete.

AUBURN: Barrett Trotter (JR), Clint Moseley (SO), Kiehl Frazier (FR)
Predicted Winner: Trotter. He knows the system and has the most experience. Incoming freshman Frazier could be a factor before the season ends.

LSU: Jordan Jefferson (SR), Jarret Lee (SR), Zach Mettenberger (SO)
Predicted Winner: Jefferson. He will probably open the season but Mettenberger will take over at some point. He wasn't brought in to sit.

OLE MISS: Nathan Stanley (JR), Zack Stoudt (JR), Randall Mackey (JR), Barry Brunetti (SO)
Predicted Winner: Stanley. He got pushed aside last year when Jeremiah Masoli was brought in. If Stanley fails, look for Stoudt to get a shot.

CALIFORNIA: Austin Hinder (R-FR), Brock Manson (SR, Beau Sweeney (JR), Alian Bridgford (SO), Zack Maynard (JR)
Predicted Winner: Maynard. Was Buffalo's starting QB who transferred to Cal.

KANSAS STATE: Justin Tuggle (JR), Sammuel Lamur (SR), Daniel Sams (FR), Colin Klein (JR)
Predicted Winner: Tuggle. Started his career at Boston College, transferred to Blinn College, now ready to challenge with Kansas State.

MISSOURI: James Franklin (SO), Tyler Gabbert (R-FR), Ashton Glaser (SO), Corbin Berkstresser (FR)
Predicted Winner: Franklin. Replacing Blaine Gabbert won't be easy and little brother Tyler is having a good spring.

UCLA: Kevin Prince (JR), Richard Brehaut (JR), Brett Hundley (FR)
Predicted Winner: Prince. If he fails, look for true freshman Hundley to take over. He's a good fit for the Bruins pistol offense.

TCU: Matt Brown (R-FR), Casey Pachall (SO)
Predicted Winner: Pachall. Replacing Andy Dalton won't be easy but Pachall has the most experience.

WASHINGTON: Keith Price (SO), Nick Montana (R-FR)
Predicted Winner: Price. Montana has more upside and could push during season.

WISCONSIN: Jon Budmayr (SO), Curt Phillips (JR)
Predicted Winner: Budmayr. Phillips is coming off a torn ACL giving Budmayr the edge.

MIAMI: Jacory Harris (SR), Stephen Morris (SO), Spencer Whipple (SR)
Predicted Winner: Toss up between Harris and Whipple. Harris has the experience but has not been consistent.

I'm sure there are many more that I didn't list......post them for us.

UCLA's freshman Hundley has a very good shot at starting sometimes tis season. Price is a walking injury, and Brehaut simply does not have a lot of talent. UCLA has basically nothing to lose this season.

BD, I think freshman Hundley will be the starter by the third game of the season.

Head coach walking a thin line....I know you differ, but I say this is his last year.

Just no progress....especially when you have to compete with USC.

It's attitudes like yours that stopped games between the schools for a while. Grow up, and become a part of humanity.

Workhorse. It should be Neuheisels last year, but the fact that he has so many new assistant coaches, and UCLA's history of being tight and allowing contracts to expire, rather than having to pay the year of fired head coaches contract, is why I think he lasts until the 2012 season is over.

                    TEXAS
According to the Dallas Morning News, Sunday's annual Orange-White game will be televised by ESPN. The Morning News notes that the Longhorns spring game will be the only Big-12 game televised nationally by the network. After a 5-7 season, spring drills have been off limits to fans and media. School officials say they are expecting up to 80,000 fans for the game.

                    ARIZONA
By way of the Tuscon Citizen, it's being reported that linebackers R.J. Young and Trevor Erno have quit the team. This leaves Arizona very thin with only five linebackers on the team. Freshman Kyle Benson and walk-on Bilal Muhammed now move up to second team. The good news is that three freshman linebackers will be available this fall.

                    OLE MISS
Defensive lineman Kentrell Lockett has been granted a waiver that will give him a sixth season of eligibity. Lockett suffered a season ending ACL tear in the fourth game of the 2010 season, leading the senior to apply for a medical waiver with the NCAA. In 2008 and 2009, Lockett started all 26 games for the Rebels, earning some All-SEC honors. Good news for the Rebs.

                    WISCONSIN
The Badgers opening game against UNLV has been moved to primetime Thursday night. The game was scheduled to be played on Saturday, September 3, but will now be played on Thursday, September 1. It will be Wisconsin's first Thursday night game since 2000. The Badgers lead the all-time series between the two schools 7-2.

                    NOTRE DAME
For the first time in two decades, the Fighting Irish will play a night game at Notre Dame Stadium. The school announced their October 22 game against Southern Cal will be played at 7:30 p.m. ET. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 43-35-5, although USC has won seven of the last eight. The Irish won last year's game 20-16 in Los Angeles.

                    ALABAMA
Experience won't be an issue for Bama's linebackers this fall. The unit appears to have even more talent assembled than the national championship starting linebackers from 2009. No offense to Eryk Anders and Cory Reamer, but C.J. Mosley and Nico Johnson bring more size and ability to the middle of the defense. Now with some experience, this group is poised to make more of a difference breaking through pass blockers and affecting the quarterback after a down year in 2010. Remember this name, C.J. Mosley. Mosley started and played well as a true freshman last season and is having a great off-season program.

                    AUBURN
The Tigers went through their fifth practice of the spring on Wednesday and will practice today before scrimmaging Saturday. All practices are closed to the public. The annual spring game at Jordan-Hare Stadium will be April 16 at 2 p.m..

                      West coast Take:

Arizona is really going to have defensive problems this season. They lost 3 of their starting 4 down linemen to graduation, along with a CB and a Safety. LB was suppose to be one of their stronger positions, but with more losses, they will be very thin at LB. Will Arizona be able to stop anyone?

USC playing Notre Dame at night is a bit of an advantage for the Trojans. Notre Dame rarely plays night games, and USC play many of them. Not only that, but the game normally started at 11 or 11:30 am, PST, very early for USC. Now it will be much later, negating the time change.

In every college FB season there are several time changes that make for opportunities for the handicapper. This is one of them.

Wrecktangle, one of out gang wanted to know where you live now. We know you went to Auburn, just not sure if you still live in Alabama. My bud Silver thinks you live in California, home of our friend Bigdaddy. If so, we might just get an opening week contest with you two guys so we can make some wagers.

Not being nosie, just asking my friend. You went to Auburn, Bigdaddy married an Auburn girl. We like that for a good matchup of SEC football if both of you guys live in California.

I see some bets there....would be fun.

                                MARYLAND
Maryland confirmed in a press release Saturday that their 2009-2010 four year APR for football is 922, three points below the 925 cutoff point for potential penalities. Because of the substandard total over that multi-year period, the Terps will lose three football scholarships for the 2011 season. That hurts!

                                NORTH CAROLINA
Defensive end Michael McAdoo was one of seven Tarheel football players who missed the entire 2010 season because of their roles in an impermissible benefits/academic scandal. After having his eligibility permanently stripped in November, McAdoo's appeal was denied by the NCAA in February. McAdoo was found to have received $103 in impermissible benefits as well as a family member giving him to much help on a paper or presentation. McAdoo has hired an attorney to help him try to gain eligibility. The NCAA can be tough so I don't like his chances.

                                SOUTHERN CAL
Trojan defensive end Armond Armstead was given medical clearance Friday to do some running as well as lift weights for the first time since being hospitalized for a few days last week. Amidst fears that he may be suffering from some type heart condition, medical personnel have been cautious concerning any physical activity. Armstead started ten games in 2010 and is being counted on to be an experienced anchor on USC's defensive line.

Linebacker Brice Hawkes has been kicked off the football team. Hawkes had been suspended twice in the past three months and the third one sent him packing. As a freshmen in 2010, Hfawkes played in all eleven games. What a jerk!

A little over a week ago after word surfaced that Alabama had the inside track to sign Duron Carter, the former Ohio State wide receiver has landed in Tuscaloosa. Carter's father, ex-Buckeye great, confirmed that his son will be playing for the Tide. Carter said head coach Nick Saban played a significant role in the decision. Carter will be eligible to play immediately in 2011.

WH's list shows the incredible amount of talent that has gone thru ND's programs. They should be top 25 every year.

After that horrid NCAA Championship Basketball game last night, I hope that the pundits who want a playoff system similar to that joke are now silenced. That was the worst Championship game in history. Even the announcers had to admit that it was a terrible game. This is what happens when you have a bunch of Juco teams playing each other, and that is all that NCAA Hoops has beecome. Leave NCAA Football alone. I am working on a piece regarding a "plus onje" system now, and will have it ready shortly, but for now, do not even consider anything resembling that trash we have seen in the last two weeks called a playoff system.

BD, Butler couldn't hit the broad side of a barn last night. I kissed that $330 down the tubes.

                                        LSU
With just a few days of spring practice left, Jordon Jefferson is still No. 1 at quarterback. Heading into spring drills, many thought it was just a matter of time before transfer Zack Mettenberger staked his claim to the starting job. So far, Jefferson has held him off. Head coach Les Miles said Jefferson is having better practices and throwing the ball better than the other quarterbacks. Last season, he hit 56 percent of his passes for 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

                                        AUBURN
Nearly two weeks in spring practice, and following a weekend scrimmage, head coach Gene Chizik said that quarterback's Barrett Trotter and Clint Mosely remain neck and neck to replace Cam Newton. Kichl Frazier, a member of Auburn's recruiting class, will not join the program until summer camp and is a player who some regard as a legitimate contender for the job.

                                        OLE MISS
Senior quarterback Randall Mackey has been the talk of Ole Miss' spring drills so far. Mackey transferred from the JUCO ranks to Ole Miss in 2010, but did not attempt a pass last season. In early February, Mackey underwent surgury on his knee, although his early return make it clear the knee is no longer an issue. Mackey is one of four quarterback's battling for the starters job.

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor underwent surgery in January to repair torn ligaments in his left foot. Last week, Pryor underwent another medical procedure on his foot. I guess Pryor will have plenty of time to rehab seeing that he can't play until the sixth game of the season.

Born, didn't that happen right after Harbaugh left? Shaw was the Stanford Offensive Coordinator under Harbaugh.

Houston Nutt is raving about QB Randall Mackey. He had better be right because Ole Miss is going to have to score a lot to win games. They lose 9 starters on their defense.

Auburn is hoping that their QB and overall lack of talent problems are the only ones they fact this season. With the NCAA being hammered from all sides because of the Newton treatment, and new stories breaking out about payoffs at Auburn, it could be a very long season for the War Eagle.

                                                ARKANSAS
Head coach Bobby Petrino enters his fourth season with the Hogs after winning ten games last season and going to the Sugar Bowl for the first time in thirty years. Petrino is known as an offensive guy, but he has worked to improve his defense each year and it is paying off. Last year the defense jumped from 89th nationally to 36th nationally in total defense and Petrino is looking for more improvement this season. Arkansas looks like an SEC championship-caliber team should look up front defensively. Byran Jones is 312 pounds, DeQuinta Jones is 310 pounds, Alfred Davis is 326 pounds and JUCO transfer Robert Thomas is 326 pounds. A jump into the top 20 nationally in total defense this year should have the Hogs in the thick of the SEC West division race.

                                                ALABAMA
During Bama's Saturday scrimmage, quarterbacks AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims both threw for three touchdowns and received the majority of work, splitting time equally with the first and second offenses. Sims was 20 of 30 for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns with 2 interceptions while McCarron was 18 of 33 for 189 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. "We moved the ball effectively," Saban said. "We did a nice job on the offensive line; did a nice job running the ball as well. Both backs, Richardson and Lacy, made some big plays out there. I was really pleased with the offense today."

                                                FLORIDA
New Gator coach Will Muschamp is looking forward to Saturday's spring game to see how much progress his offense has made since installing a new pro-style offense. Last season, Florida ranked 10th in the SEC in yards per game and 8th in scoring offense. Muschamp has run his team through a slew of situational drills, such as working in the red zone and near the goal line, and third down and end of game situations.

                                                TENNESSEE
Quarterback Tyler Bray struggled during Saturday's scrimmage, but the news wasn't all bad for the Vols offense. Sophomore tailback Rajion Neal rushed for 152 yards on 14 carries and scored 3 touchdowns. Neal, looking to help shore up Tennessee's running game, broke loose on a 63 yard touchdown run early in the scrimmage.

                                                SOUTH CAROLINA
Senior quarterback Stephen Garcia had his best day of spring practice, as the Gamecock's offense scored touchdowns on its first four possessions in a weekend scrimmage. Sophomore backup quarterback Connor Shaw also led the offense on a pair of touchdown drives. The ole ballcoach seemed to like what he saw from his offense.

It looks as if South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia is in trouble again. This time he has been suspended indefinately from the team. That means that Connor Shaw will be running the show in the Spring game this Saturday. It looks as if Garcia's career at South Carolina is rapidly coming to an end. He simply cannot keep out of trouble. A good showing by Shaw can expedite Gardia's exit.

Stephen Garcia, senior quarterback. (embarrassment, fool, idiot, jerk, dumb, selfish). Spurrier should put his sorry ass on the road and move Connor Shaw into the drivers seat. Shaw has more up-side anyway. Garcia has become a joke at Carolina.

                                                        VIRGINIA TECH
With only three scholarship runners on the roster, it's going to be the David Wilson show this year. You won't see him in the Hokies spring game, because he will be competing with the track team that day, but there's no question this speedster will be center stage this fall.

                                                        BOSTON COLLEGE
Running back Montel Harris already has 21 career 100-yard games. You don't think he'll get a few more this season. The only reason he wouldn't reach the 1,000 yard mark is if offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers lightens his load by using Andre Williams, who proved more than capable of leading the running game when Harris was injured last year.

                                                        FLORIDA STATE
The Seminoles held their first scrimmage this week with quarterback EJ Manuel completing 29 of 42 passes for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running back Jermaine Thomas also had a good scrimmage rushing for 121 yards on 9 carries. On defense, linebackers Christian Jones and Telvin Smith stood out with 8 tackles each.

                                                        NORTHERN ILLINOIS
Linebacker Devon Butler was in critical condition yesterday after being shot off-campus. Two students are in custody in the shooting and charged with attempted first degree murder. Butler is a junior who was second on the team in tackles last season. Remember the day when kids would just square off and start swinging....now its bang, bang.

                                                        GEORGIA TECH
Not even head coach Paul Johnson knows who his top back will be yet, but you can almost bank on a 1,000 yard rusher to come out of his option offense. The Yellow Jackets led the nation in rushing last year. When you run the ball 753 times, somebody should crack the 1,000 yard mark. Georgia Tech's question isn't if, it's who.

                                                        UCONN
Connecticut's offense got a boost this week when running back Lyle McCombs and wide receiver Isiah Moore returned from their suspensions. McCombs had been suspended since January after a marijuana arrest, while Moore failed a drug test. UConn is very thin at the RB position with only two scholarship players available for spring practice.

                                                        NOTRE DAME
The Fighting Irish took the ninth spring practice of the season outdoors for the first time yesterday, leaving the indoor confort of Loftus Center for LaBar fields. The coaches have a good feel for the top guys and are now working on developing depth on the roster. I believe ND will surprise folks this year.

For the 2013 season, Notre Dame has scheduled a powerhouse from the SEC. Yep, Vanderbilt travels to South Bend for a good beating.

I was told that Vandy scheduled Ohio State for the 2013 season, along with home games against Townsend, Northwestern and Wake Forest. I do not see Notre Dame on their schedule, and vice versa.

Rather than go to South Bend and get the dog beat out of them, they will go to Columbus and get their tail kicked to open the 2013 season.

He spent a year at Rice, but returned to Kansas to coach receivers and serve as co-offensive coordinator alongside Chuck Long. He replaces Darrell Wyatt, who left to coach receivers at Texas. Long retained play calling duties.

                                                                  OKLAHOMA

He did so during the Sooners' win over UConn in the Fiesta Bowl. They'll replace Kevin Wilson, who left to become head coach at Indiana. Heupel will continue to coach quarterbacks as he has since 2006. Norvell will continue to coach receivers as he has since 2008.

He'll replace Dana Holgorsen, who took over as offensive coordinator at West Virginia and is scheduled to replace Bill Stewart as the head coach in 2012. Monken previously coached receivers for the Jaxsonville Jaguars.

                                                                  TEXAS

Harsin spent a decade at Boise Stte and five years as offensive coordinator, and will replace Greg Davis, the longtime coordinator under Mack Brown. Applewhite is the co-coordinator after coaching running backs since 2008, but Harsin will call the plays.

What strikes me as interesting is the variation in the number of games played by these opponents. In 2004, the undefeated USC team's opponents played a total of 152 games. USC played 13 games. In 2009 and 2010, both Alabama and Auburn's opponents played 179 games. Now both of those teams played 14 games, but one game does not equal a 27 game total difference. This also clearly points out the fact that the non-AQ schools played far inferior opposition than the AQ schools.
