#177NO PAY FOR PLAYERS
The topic of whether student-athletes should be paid is not a debate in the eyes of the NCAA's new president. Mark Emmert has made it clear that under his watch, college athletes will not be compensated as though they were professionals. "They are student-athletes. They are not our employees, they don't work for us," he said. "They are our students, so we don't pay them." Speaking at a Town Hall Los Angeles luncheon on Wednesday, Emmert touched on a variety of topics, including NCAA funding, enforcing rules infractions, conference realignment and the Bowl Championship Series. Emmert officially assumed his duties late last year and already believes the NCAA is doing as well now as at any time in its history.Comment -

Head coach Bob Stoops enjoyed a good season during 2010, going 12-2, winning the Big-12 Championship, followed by a Fiesta Bowl victory. As a result, the Tulsa World reports Stoops will be given a $1 million raise bringing his yearly salary to $4.875 million. The coaching staff as a whole will make nearly a combined $7 million. Stoops raise makes him the third highest paid football coach behind only Alabama's Nick Saban ($5.16 million) and Texas' Mack Brown ($5.1 million).
TENNESSEE
The Vols just can't divorce themselves from former coach Lane Kiffin. The NCAA is charging Kiffin with "failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the football program and failure to monitor the activities regarding compliance of assistant coaches." As the Notice of Allegations involved their current head coach, Southern Cal also received a copy of the NCAA's letter sent to Tennessee. As of now, USC's athletic director Pat Haden says he supports his football coach.
SOUTH CAROLINA
John Butler has been hired to be the team's new special team coordinator less than two weeks after he was hired as an assistant for the Houston Texans. Butler takes over for Shane Beamer, who left South Carolina to coach with his father at Virginia Tech. Before taking the job in Houston, Butler spent the last four seasons coaching linebackers and special teams at Minnesota.
Also yesterday, Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier announced his son, Steve Spurrier Jr., will become the team's recruiting coordinator. The younger Spurrier coached wide receivers since his dad came to South Carolina in 2005 and was named the team's passing coordinator in 2009.
AUBURN
A week ago, the Tigers lost defensive line coach Tracy Rocker to the Tennessee Titans. According to the Birmingham News, Clint Hurtt was on campus interviewing yesterday. Hurtt is currently the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisville. Before his only year with the Cardinals, Hurtt was recruiting coordinator with the Miami Huricanes. Anyone think recruiting in South Florida has entered Gene Chizik's thinking.
BAYLOR/TEXAS TECH
Baylor sent out a press release yesterday afternoon confirming that their 2011 game against Texas Tech will be played at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The game time will be set by the Big 12 and its television partners. All told, this will be the third straight neutral field meeting between the two schools.Comment -

#183CCI, the NCAA will be turning over a lot of rocks looking at Auburn, especially after the Cam Newton situation.
LSU
Tiger athletic officials say they'll seek approval of a $700,000 per year contract for new offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe and raises for other assistants. The contract proposals will go before LSU's Board of Supervisors on March 4. Kragthorpe's three year contract would give him the same pay as defensive coordinator John Chavis. The athletic department also proposes raises for defensive line coach Brick Haley from $340,000 to $380,000; for ofensive line coach Greg Studrawa from $230,000 to $275,000; and for tight ends coach Steve Ensminger from $170,000 to $190,000.
GEORGIA
The Georgia athletic board has put a hold on a proposed $10 price hike for tickets to the annual game against Florida in Jacksonville. The price hike recently was approved by Florida's athletic board. Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said Thursday the increase proposed by Florida for the 2011 game will be reconsidered for the 2012 game. If the Dawgs had gone 10-2 last season, the ticket prices would have been approved. Tickets are $40 and $70 for the game this year.
SOUTHERN CAL
Longtime Nebraska assistant Ted Gilmore is the Trojans new receivers coach, head coach Lane Kiffin said yesterday. The 43 year-old Gilmore spent the past six seasons as Nebraska's receivers coach. Gilmore was also Nebraska's recruiting coordinator the past four years. He was recently fired by coach Bo Pelini.
STANFORD
Quarterback Andrew Luck could have been a top pick in this year's NFL draft if he had come out. Luck decided to stay in school and play one more season for the Cardinals. As a result of passing on the NFL and its big money, he has decided to take out an insurance policy that protects him against injury. According to his father, Luck has secured a $5 million insurance policy through the NCAA that will cover the QB in case of an injury that would preclude a career in the NFL.Comment -

#184$40 and $70 are very cheap prices to see the Florida-Georgia game. USC charges $410.00 for a season ticket in int endzones for their 6 home games. That averages out to over $68.00 per game, and those are for the cheapest seats in the house.Comment -

Florida is spending more on assistants than it is on first year head coach Will Muschamp. The Gators have committed $2.93 million to Muschamp's nine man coaching staff in 2011, according to contracts released yesterday. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis signed a three year deal worth $2.495 million. He will earn $765,000 in 2011, then $865,000 the next two years. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn signed a two year deal worth $1 million. He will get $490,000 in 2011, then $510,000 the following year. Muschamp agreed to a five year deal worth $13.5 million, or $2.7 million annually. He assembled a staff with lots of NFL experience. He also paid them accordingly. The staff will make about $300,000 more than last year's assistants. Nonetheless, the Gators are actually saving money since former coach Urban Meyer was making $4 million annually. Aside from Muschamp's two coordinators, assistant salaries range from $190,000 to $290,000, based on experience. Tight ends coach Derek Lewis, defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson and receivers coach Aubrey Hill all signed one year deals. Lewis will earn $190,000. Robinson and Hill will make $200,000 each. Defensive line coach Bryant Young signed a two year deal worth $230,000 annually. Offensive line coach Frank Verducci signed a two year deal worth $290,000 anually. Linebacker coach/special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin and running backs coach Brian White, both retained from Meyer's staff, are making $265,000 and $240,000, respectively.

#191Hey Nick, if you are going to waste space....start your own damn thread.
SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE TITLE GAME
The SEC has agreed to keep its football championship game at the Georgia Dome through the 2017 season. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced the deal Friday, adding two years to the existing five year contract. The game was held for two years in Birmingham's Legion Field before moving to Atlanta in 1994. All but one of the games held at the 70,000 seat Georgia Dome has been a sellout, and the last five conference champions have gone on to win the national title. The NFL Atlanta Falcons are working to build a new outdoor stadium near the Georgia Dome, but officials have stressed that the indoor facility must remain open to host events such as the SEC championship and basketball's Final Four.
TEXAS TECH
In a press relaese issued by the school, Tech announced that they had hired Kirby Hocutt as the school's new athletic director. Hocutt had been Miami's (FL) athletic director for the past three years. The 38 year old Hocutt will replace Gerald Myers who announced his retirement last August.
So far this spring, Seth Doege is clearly the number one quarterback heading into the 2011 season. Doege completed 17 of 26 passes for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns in the teams first scrimmage. Head coach Tommy Tuberville said he has been well pleased with Doege's play during the off season and so far this spring.
OKLAHOMA
Starting cornerback Jamell Fleming did not enroll in school for the spring semester and will not participate in spring practice. Fleming led the Sooners with five interceptions in 2010, and was second in the country with 17 passes deflected. As a result of his play, he was named to the All-Big 12 team. Bet anyone a dollar he will be on the team this fall.
NORTH CAROLINA
Joe Robinson has been hired as the Tar Heels new defensive line coach. Robinson had spent the past three seasons as line coach and special teams coordinator at LSU. In addition to LSU, Robinson has also been an assistant at Southern Miss, Arizona and Louisiana Tech. Robinson will replace Brian Baker who left last month to join the Dallas Cowboys staff.
MIAMI
Hurricane coaches are not happy with the team's receivers and are letting them know it. Last season, Miami receivers dropped an astounding 67 passes. "Underachieving", "unacceptable", "terrible", are words used by offensive coordinator Jebb Fisch. "They look like NFL receivers - long, rangy guys but certainly not in terms of talent." Based on the coaches comments, either these receivers step up their game and improve or watch from the sidelines next season. After dropping 67 passes, I would give'em hell also coach.Comment -

#192The Big 12-2, now shutout of the last week of the College Football Regular season (Dec 3rd), is thinking about moving either the Texas-Texas A&M game, or the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game to that date. The problem will be what time slot to put these games. The Big 12-2 lost it's championship game, while the Big 10+2 and Pac 12 gained a championship game. The Pac 10 Championship game will be televised by FOX, and the SEC Championship game will be televised by CBS. The Big 10 and ACC Championship games will be televised by ABC/ESPN. Even the lowly Big East has two games scheduled for Dec 3rd. Only the Big 12 is left out, and they want to be in the mix. Because of the additions, any Big 12 game wold have to go against either the Pac 12, or SEC Championship game, and that would not be a good thing for ABC/ESPN. It is highly unlikely that the Texas-A&M game would leave it's traditional Thanksgiving Day game, but OU-Okie State may make the jump.Comment -

#193Posting in hopes that we can revive this thread. Here are a couple of Auburn tidbits and a national article on college football and crime. I have a couple of thoughts on the crime article. 1) Pitt - keep your players under control. 2) I wonder how those numbers compare to the general population numbers of 18-22 year old males that have a criminal charge of some kind. My guess is that it would be similar or non-college enrollee's would have a higher rate.
- Auburn has hired Mike Pelton to be the new DL coach. Pelton coached under Gene Chizik at Iowa State and was an 1st team SEC at Auburn his senior year.
- Eric Smith has been kicked off the Auburn team. (personal note - he was a thug whoshould have been booted sooner. allegedly pushed his girlfriend down in public)

#199THUGS AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Sports Illustrated just published the results of a six-month investigation it conducted with CBS News, which found Pittsburgh opened the season with 22 players that had faced criminal charges. The magazine reported that it did criminal background checks on every player on the roster of each team that made its top 25 preseason poll. Pitt opened the season ranked 16th by the magazine. Iowa, which was ranked sixth, and Arkansas, ranked 23rd, each had the second most players with criminal records with 18. Pitts Wannstedt was ousted in December after the Panthers' disappointing 7-5 season. The former Dolphins and Bears coach was hired by the Buffalo Bills in January. No truth to the rumor that Pittsburgh is changing its name from Panthers to Ex-Cons.Comment -

#200Just clearing up/adding to a couple of nuggets above relating to Auburn (since that is by FAR the program I know the most about).
The sale of Toomers Oaks saplings has been going on for 5-10 years and has nothing to do with the recent poisoning of the trees. I'm sure that business has seen a boost in sales because of it. AU has a history of good sales&marketing ideas. To help pay for stadium renovation in the north endzone (outside of stadium where Tiger Walk ends) we sold bricks for $150.... yep,$150 for a brick the would be used in the construction. You could put 3 lines of info on it so you would be "part of history"..at least til the brick wears out. Example would be: The Smith Family, Selma, AL WAR EAGLE. I have one with mine and my wifes initials and something else I cannot remember.
re: NCAA, Cam and AU... don't think there are many rocks left to turn over. I don't believe we paid him, at least not in the amounts reported, but if we did it must have been done so well that it won't show up unless the receipient wants it to.
Related to that is point #3. Scott Moore has been really hyping tapes with Cam and or Cecil on them. Yesterday one of those made it to the web. It was incredibly static-filled. John Bond's lawyer made a statement last night that the tape was a fake. For those of you within listening distance of that radio show PLEASE take Moore with extreme skepticism. He has been fired from previous radio shows for falsehoods. He recently got out of jail for failure to pay child support. He also was sentenced to time for spousal abuse (later changed to split of fines and probation). He is in bankruptcy (no slam there as I personally know many who are on hard times) but he is desparate for that radio show to do well, so he may hype things to try and generate ratings moreso than normal.
Lastly, if something is wrong at AU I will bash AU just as much as anyone. See: Eric Smith situation or the entire tenure of Terry Bowden. I love AU but I am not someone who will tolerate foolish-ness at a place I consider FAMILY.Comment -

#205Yes, Chuck was a former Vol and had connections with Dooley as they were high school teamates in Athens GA. He worked on Rex Ryans staff with the Jets as a pass rush specialist and assistant D-line coach. It appears his personality was a much better fit with the Jets than they were with the Vols. Linebackers coach Lance Thompson will now coach the D-Line and former Titans linebacker Peter Sirmon will coach the linebackers at UT.Comment -

#206So basically Dooley has to reconstruct his defensive coach allignment. I hate to say this but I do not think Dooley has what it takes to be successful in the SEC. He is a very nice guy, but I just do not see him taking Tennessee to the Top of the SEC. If it was not for his last name, he probably would not even have the job. His 23-27 overall coaching record seems to indicate that much. He has one 8 game winning season at some nothing school and everyone thinks he is good. He is not.Comment -

#207The SEC East is ripe for the picking with UGA struggling, UF changing coaches, and I am not sold that So. Carolina will be a perennial power. Dooley has an unimpressive W/L record but Bear Bryant would have a hard time winning at La Tech. That 8 win season included La Techs first bowl win in 31 years and only its 2nd all time.
Dooley was a hire that held many similarities to the Kiffin hire in that they both had famous last names and have accomplished very little as head coaches. Kiffin was an assistant under Carroll and Dooley under Saban. Kiffin has a son name Knox, Dooley a son named Peyton. What Dooley has to prove is that he can coach talent at a high level. Im not ready to say he will be winning SEC Championships anytime soon but I think he will bring stability and put a decent product on the field. 5 years from now if we are still talking 7 to 8 win seasons then it'll be time to go in a new direction.Comment -

#208I think that is a fair observation. The problem I see is that the SEC East is weaker than 4 to 5 teams in the West. I think any SEC West team, with the exception of Mississippi, can defeat any SEC East team. The other 5 SEC West teams would most likely win the SEC East this season. When I talk about the SEC, I am referring to the entire Conference.Comment -
