#204The goal was simple, make Penn’s debut at 145 pounds a good one, while keeping the transition from welterweight smooth and effortless.
Fast-forward a few months, and the aftermath of this relationship is almost nightmarish. Both parties have taken opposite sides of the coin, but for Dolce, professionalism has gone out the window.
In cases like this, it is our duty to reach out to BJ Penn for clarity, and a response, this is after all, BJPENN.COM.
BJPENN.COM: We’ve heard the rumors, and seen the small jabs back-and-forth, but what is this feud with Mike Dolce really all about BJ?
BJ: Dolce was brought in to bring me back to my sparring weight of 160 (after weigh-ins) and instead sent me in to the ring under 150 pounds, leaving me extremely dehydrated. He has assumed a role that he has done nothing wrong, and he’s actually saying he did a great job, and I’m the one to blame.
BJPENN.COM: How did Mike bring you down to 145 pounds?
BJ: Dolce had me take four different types of diuretics. He did not want me to sweat out a single pound. He put me on four different diuretic pills, had me take them four-times per day, and I did that for a week.
I took Expel, Dandelion Root, UVA Ursi and one more, I forget the name. This was the first time a nutritionist ever offered me diuretics to make weight, in my whole career.
The day before the weigh-in I was at 147 pounds. On that day, I addressed some concerns to Dolce about how I could not carry my bags or walk up any large amount of steps. My heart rate would shoot up and I would feel like fainting, but his approach didn’t change.
He didn’t have me sit in a jacuzzi to sweat, like you usually see him do. All he did was give me pills to suck all the weight out of me, but he didn’t have the knowledge, or the expertise to put the water back in, without an I.V.. (Previously a welterweight and lightweight, Penn walked into the cage at just 148lbs.)
Look how Ronda cut weight. She was 10 pounds over the day before weigh-in. I was only a pound over. He says Ronda didn’t use an IV either, but we cut weight totally different.
Mike Dolce does help a lot fighters, I’m not sitting here saying he’s totally useless. But he has no degree, no formal training, and there are a lot of holes in his game.
BJPENN.COM: So you make-weight, but didn’t gain any weight back. What happened after?
BJ: On the day of the fight, I woke up at 7:00 am weighing 150 pounds. Mike Dolce left me a 0 sodium breakfast of a half cup of oats, a couple tablespoons hemp and chia seeds, and a cup of blueberries. He was due back at 11(am) for lunch and after being two-hours late, we actually started to worry about him.
I was sending Parillo (Penn’s longtime cornerman) to Whole Foods to pick up lunch and he contacted Dolce (via phone). Dolce tells him he got stuck taking pictures at the (UFC Fan) Expo, and for Parillo to cancel his trip to Whole Foods, because he ‘had my food’ on him.
In the end, because Dolce was so late, Parillo went to Whole Foods anyway. And while Parillo was walking out, with my food, he saw Mike Dolce walking in, to grab the same food that he already said he had on him. And it was all just fabrication.
BJPENN.COM: What do you say to the people who say all you’re doing is making excuses for the loss?
BJ: Frankie’s the man, he bested me three-times inside the Octagon, that speaks for itself.
Mike Dolce is giving me the best excuse by saying I didn’t train. I could use that excuse all day. That would be the best excuse, ‘Yup he’s right I didn’t train, that’s it, thank you.’ I wish I could use that excuse, but it’s not true, and the sparring partners he brought in know it.
Whatever, it’s my fault for using him. But now that he is saying these things, I can’t wait to see him, and his glass jaw, in person.
