#1064I wish to continue a grateful thank you to all those who have extended their well wishes to my Dad in his battle with cancer. Today, hospice was discussed with the doctor as the only alternative. Close friends and family have been a gift in these times. I truly want to thank all the thread goers for their support. Although I don't personally know many of you, the messages sent have made a difference.
May God take my dad fast and give him peace.Comment -

#1065Hey fellas, just wanted to update all you guys about my dad's situation. Hospice has been notified and things are declining quickly. But let me share with you something that happened this past weekend. My dad's love was the thoroughbreds. Every Saturday for years, my dad would go to the track. He was never a big better, a guy who enjoyed conversations about the good ole days of racing. As a child I recall the stories of Eddie Arcaro, Ted Atkinson, Nashua, Native Dancer and such.
My family and I decided to take Dad to the track. I did not know whether we would spend 10 minutes there or 5 hours. I was not sure whether he would live through the day. But we made an effort to take him to his recreational love, horse racing. It was remarkable. It seems if he was renewed by his attendance at the races. His appetite returned, he ate like a champ. In his wheelchair, seated at a desk in the simulcast room, my dad handicaps the first race at Saratoga. As post time approaches, my dad instructs me to place $2 win on the number 2 horse. I look up at the board and see that it was 25-1. I made the bet and my family including my mother, wife, my son, and best friend watch the horses go around the Saratoga oval. They entered the stretch with the number 2 in the lead. We cheered and cheered with the hope that and incredible thing could happen for one final time in my dads life. They neared the finish line with us roaring for the 2. They crossed the finish line and yes the number 2 horse was the winner by a nose. The cheers suddenly turned to tears, knowing that my dad picked the big longshot to win the race. We continued to cry and realized that something special happened that day.
We stayed there for about 2 hours playing other races, enjoying ourselves, knowing that this would be the last time Dad would go to the races. Dad suddenly got very tired and we left to go home. Needless to say wheelchairing him out of the track was emotional. Dad's comment to me in his weary voice said, "Son we should come here every week". My reply was absolutely, Dad.
Well, Dad won't be returning to the track. His cancer is starting to shut down his bodily functions. It was great to know that I was able to provide a sprinkle of happiness to my dad's life. Something he has done for me so many times. The end is coming but the memories of that day will last a lifetime.
Thanks to all out there.
Maybe with him.

#1077Condolences
Most sincere condolences, 5's.
From what you've said it sounds like your Dad had a full life and a great family. If a man doesn't get cheated in those most important respects, there has to be some solace in that.Comment -

#1083Pair of 5's, I was wondering where you have been lately. I hate to hear why you have been gone. Nothing can ever replace our memories with our parents. Sounds like you got to do so many great things together, keep your chin up. Have a great time at the bash. Maybe next year I will be able to attend and meet you in person.

#1084Welcome back 5's.
Nice to see "The Pair" thread lit up and on pg. 1.
You have to stay up and running from here. If the Reds and Twins wind up in the W.S. - you can sell your prop picks for next year and retire.Comment -
