This is not a homer pick. The USMNT is simply the better side in this match. The Iranians were destroyed by the English, and they only scored a second goal because of a meaningless penalty in extra time.
The USMNT looked like the better side for nearly the entirety of their match against Wales. The same cannot be said for Iran. They looked destined to play for a draw against the Welsh until Wayne Hennessey received a red card in the 86th minute. From there it was all Iran.
These two teams have had trouble finishing at this tournament. Yet the Americans know that a draw will not be enough this time. That will change their approach and lead to more opportunities than they’ve had in the first two games. Opportunities against Iran generally lead to good results.
