My Oilers vs. Avalanche prediction and odds back the underdog visitors to pull off a shock result despite a strong shooting performance from Cale Makar.

The Edmonton Oilers suffered one of their most humiliating defeats in franchise history the last time they faced Colorado Avalanche, losing 9-1 at home in November.

I'm backing Kris Knoblauch's team to rebound with a defiant display when they meet tonight at Ball Arena in Denver (10 p.m. ET, TNT) in my Oilers vs. Avalanche prediction. The Avalanche, who've won five in a row, are the -178 moneyline betting favorite. As part of our NHL best bets, I'm headlining Cale Makar, who is overdue for an Over on his shots prop, and the ever-prolific Nathan MacKinnon.

💰 Oilers vs. Avalanche prediction & best bet

Oilers ML (+150)

Despite their grossly inconsistent season, the Oilers are back-to-back Stanley Cup finalists, and they would have loathed losing to Colorado by eight goals.

Connor McDavid and Co. would have circled this revenge game on their calendar, and I expect a spirited display from a team that played one of their best defensive games of the season in a 4-2 win in Sin City on Sunday.

While the Avs are rolling with five straight wins, this is usually when the Oilers kick it into high gear, emphasizing responsible, sound defensive hockey. There is no bigger test of their collective mettle, and I believe they will assemble a statement display.

Score prediction: Oilers 4, Avalanche 3 (+4000)

🔥 Best Oilers vs. Avalanche player prop bet

Cale Makar Over 2.5 shots (-128)

If you can believe it, Makar hit the Over on this total in just two of the previous 10 games. Yet, his odds are shorter than Danny DeVito's.

Not only is he overdue, but Makar loves playing the Oilers. He has four goals in the previous two meetings and hit the Over on this total in five successive head-to-heads. Before his recent dip in shot production, Makar had at least three shots in five of six games. I'd play this bet to -130.

Nathan MacKinnon anytime goal (-110)

MacKinnon, the Hart Trophy odds betting favorite, is back to his goal-scoring best, netting in three of the previous four games.

He led the team in expected goals in two of the three games in which he scored and was second in the other, with returnee Nazem Kadri preventing the sweep.

MacKinnon's recent goal-scoring exploits are child's play compared to how prolific he's been against the Oilers, scoring five in the last three head-to-heads. He scored two the last time the Oilers played in Colorado, while netting three in the previous two trips to Alberta's capital.

💡 How I'm betting Oilers vs. Avalanche

Follow all of our NHL analysis and expert predictions this season.

This is one of those situations where I'm leaning more heavily on my instincts and gut feeling. I can't envision the Oilers capitulating as they did in Edmonton in the 9-1 defeat.

I'm counting on McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to show their leadership character and galvanize the troops. They'll also use it as a springboard to build momentum down the stretch.

That directly correlates with my Under selection. The Oilers cannot afford to play poorly defensively against the league's best. My main concern is that the Oilers won't get a strong goaltending performance.

Despite backing the Oilers, Makar and MacKinnon are usually at the peak of their powers against Edmonton, which I don't see changing.
