🤔 Where are the Super Bowl lines moving?
Let’s take a look at how the moneyline, spread, and total are shifting - and where bettors are putting their money - as Super Bowl 60 approaches. But first, here’s a word from BetMGM on their largest liability heading into the Big Game.
What do the sportsbooks need?
“In the biggest event of the year, bettors are pulling for the Seahawks while the book hopes for a low-scoring affair with minimal touchdowns. Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Seattle’s Defense/Special Teams finding pay dirt have become bad results for the book right now. While there’s still some time before the game, it looks like the game and futures market will be rewarding to bettors if the Seahawks cover the game and win outright.” - Christian Cipollini, Trading Manager, BetMGM
Moneyline movement
We've seen some big early movement here in Seattle's favor with sportsbooks likely needing bettors to start wagering on New England before kickoff.
Even at -180, the price didn’t scare off early Seattle backers - and it’s now ballooned to -230. Action has continued to flow on the Seahawks over the past few days, pushing New England close to +200 on the moneyline before stabilizing at +190. If you’re hunting for the Patriots at the best possible price, stay patient, as this number could climb toward +220 at its ceiling.
Point spread movement
Immediately after this matchup was set, there was early and heavy money on the Seahawks, which quickly moved the Super Bowl opening line from -3.5 to -4.5. The point spread eventually touched -5.0 before returning to -4.5 early Sunday night. The industry consensus now sits with Seattle at -4.5, with a few books still offering Seahawks -5.0. Now, there is a chance that this spread balloons to -6.5 and potentially passes the key number of -7.5, as 73% of bets have come in on Seattle, so keep an eye out for continued movement here.
The final 48 hours before kickoff will see a bigger push from the public. If you're a Seattle bettor, you might want to hop on this line now, and if you like the Patriots, I'd suggest remaining patient. In my prediction to win Super Bowl 60, I'm backing Seattle to roll over the Pats.
Total movement
Bettors also hit the Over as soon as the lines were released, moving the point total from 46.5 to 47.5 before settling back down to 46.5. The Over has taken roughly 68% of the bets so far. However, we've since seen money come in on the Under, which has moved the point total all the way down to 45.5 at some books. The Over has become a true liability for sportsbooks in the Super Bowl (as it is again this year), hitting in the last two of three games. Remember, this game is being played in San Francisco, which could mean that the weather will be conducive to points.
We'll be updating this section as we inch closer to the Super Bowl - accurate as of Jan. 30.
📈 Key Super Bowl betting trends: Patriots vs. Seahawks
- Against the spread record: Seattle is 14-5-0 ATS this season, New England is 13-6-1 ATS - both records include the playoffs; both are the best marks in the NFL this year.
- Rematch history: This is the ninth Super Bowl rematch in history - the Pats are 4-0 historically in these matchups. The last time these two played in the Big Game, Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson at the goal line to win Super Bowl XLIX.
- The underdog edge: Underdogs have covered in five straight Super Bowls. The last favorite to win was the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, beating the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20.
🏆 Super Bowl prediction: Where will the betting lines close?
The point spread will continue to move in Seattle's favor. I'm actually surprised the bookmakers are giving the Patriots this much credit after New England's opponents had a historically low 0.391 winning percentage in the regular season and a cakewalk schedule to the Super Bowl. It's no secret they've had the easier path to the Big Game, and I can see the public helping this spread inflate to 6.5 before kickoff on Feb. 8.
If you’re riding with Seattle, the time to strike at -4.5 is right now. This number will likely creep toward 6.5 by kickoff as the bandwagon fills up behind the NFC's best team. On the other side, Pats backers should be patient and circle Friday or Saturday of Super Bowl week to snag the best possible price.
🥇 Odds and line movement: Super Bowl MVP, touchdown scorers, player props
The Super Bowl MVP odds have been released and, of course, Sam Darnold (+130) is the heavy favorite to take home the award. The winning quarterback on the Super Bowl-winning team has won the MVP in five of the last six Super Bowls. There has been one defensive player and two wide receivers to win the award in the past 10 seasons outside of the position.
Let's take a look at how the Super Bowl MVP lines have moved since the beginning of the playoffs:
