Cowboys vs. Commanders Predictions & Opening Odds for Christmas Day: NFL Week 17

My early Cowboys vs. Commanders prediction backs Dallas (-5.5) to cover on Christmas Day before the line ticks up further based on Washington’s injury concerns at quarterback.

Two NFC East rivals start a Christmas Day tripleheader, which I break down with my early picks and Cowboys vs. Commanders predictions. The opening odds have Dallas as the 5.5-point betting favorite in this game that kicks off from Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. at 1 p.m. ET (Netflix).

As part of my NFL Week 17 predictions, I am backing the healthier Cowboys before the line increases further if the Commanders are forced to start third-string quarterback Josh Johnson.

Cowboys -5.5 (-110) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

In this matchup of NFC East rivals, I am siding with the healthier Cowboys.

Philadelphia outscored Washington 22-8 after backup quarterback Marcus Mariota left the game with a hand injury. In addition, two Commanders offensive linemen left last week’s game, while the team entered with 13 starters missing at least one game and nine missing seven or more.

BetMGM is one of the only best NFL betting sites offering the standard -110 juice at 52.38% implied odds to lay the 5.5 points. If Dallas covers, a $10 winning wager would net $9.09 in profit.

🔢 Cowboys vs. Commanders opening odds

  • Moneyline: Cowboys -250 | Commanders +200
  • Spread: Cowboys -5.5 (-110) | Commanders +5.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: Over 47.5 (-110) | Under 47.5 (-110)

↔️ Cowboys vs. Commanders line movement

Dallas was a 3-point favorite on the lookahead line for the NFL Week 17 odds. Therefore, the fact that the opening line for this week is higher at -5.5 despite the Cowboys being eliminated from playoff contention suggests there is doubt that Marcus Mariota will suit up for Washington. If he is officially ruled out, this number should tick up closer to the key number of seven.

There is a wide range for the O/U among the top sports betting sites, with 49.5 being the lowest total and 51 as the ceiling. Both teams allowed 29-plus points in losses last week, so this total should not plummet much if Josh Johnson is announced as Washington’s starting quarterback.

📈 Cowboys vs. Commanders trends & betting notes: Christmas Day

  • Dallas has won nine straight games as favorites against divisional opponents
  • The O/U for these teams’ Week 7 matchup closed at 55, the highest total in this rivalry since 1983
  • Dak Prescott is 11-3 ATS vs. Washington, the best quarterback against the spread versus Washington in the last 20 years
  • Dallas is 8-1 ATS in its last nine games against Washington
