Sam Darnold was spectacular Sunday night in Washington, completing 21 of 24 passes for 330 yards and four touchdowns. It was the fourth time this year — and 11th time since the 2024 season kicked off — that Darnold surpassed 255 yards. However, Darnold rarely erupts in consecutive games.
He did it Weeks 5 and 6 against Tampa Bay (341) and Jacksonville (295). But that’s the only instance in which Darnold cleared 255 yards in back-to-back games since a trio of 300-yard games with Carolina in Weeks 2-4. True, the Cardinals’ secondary is shaky. But it limited Darnold to 242 yards in Week 4. Also, only Carolina’s Bryce Young (328) and Titans rookie Cam Ward (265) have topped 250 yards against Arizona.

In 34 career NFL games, Cardinals running back Emari Demercado has exceeded four rushing attempts a grand total of four times. The first three instances were games No. 5, 7 and 8 of his career in 2023. The last time it happened? Monday night at Dallas, when Arizona leaned on Demercado 14 times en route to a 27-17 win.
Those 14 carries? One more than the 5-foot-9, 215-pound back had in his previous 10 games combined. Do the Cardinals believe Demercado is the answer to an anemic running game that has gotten even less productive without injured dual-threat QB Kyler Murray? Maybe. But I can’t see him getting nine-plus carries in consecutive weeks for the first time in more than two years.

Then last Sunday, the 6-foot-6, 255-pound Barner tallied Seattle’s final touchdown at Washington on a 1-yard run. That gives the second-year pro five touchdowns, which is tied for the team lead.
It should be noted that Barner is dealing with a calf injury and was listed as questionable on Seattle’s midweek injury report. But I expect him to play, and I expect Arizona to allow another Darnold-to-Barner end zone connection.
