The Indiana Fever hope to bounce back from a home loss earlier in the week when they host the Washington Mystics on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET (ION) from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and we're diving in with our Mystics vs. Fever predictions.
While Indiana does remain a WNBA championship odds contender, our picks are focused on defense with Caitlin Clark still out.

❌ Is Caitlin Clark playing vs. Mystics?
Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark isn't expected to play against the Mystics due to a groin injury that has sidelined her since July 15. Head coach Steph White said Monday that Clark had not yet returned to practice. ESPN reported that the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year holds no timetable for a return.

Although Indiana has been in a slight slump while losing three of its last four, the Mystics are the perfect team to get back on track against.
After a mid-season spike in wins, Washington has come crashing back down to earth, losing eight of its last 11. Poor offensive play has been bogging down Sydney Johnson's team lately, and while rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen have been providing hope, trading away Brittney Sykes seems to have killed the team's momentum.
The one-two punch of Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston should be able to do enough to pull out a decisive win for the Fever. I'm projecting Indiana to take this one 84-75 as part of my Mystics vs. Fever predictions.

The Mystics are one of the best Under teams in the WNBA this season (17-14-1), and their offense has been tough to watch.
Citron and Iriafen have been two of the league's top rookies, but asking them to carry the whole franchise is a lot, especially after shipping Sykes off to the Seattle Storm. Washington is second-last in the W in offensive rating (101.2) and has seen its average points per game dip to 78.2 since the beginning of July after being up at 80.8 in June.
Though the Fever aren't a defensive powerhouse, they've given up fewer than 80 points in five of their last nine contests behind the play of Boston. She's top 10 in the league in defensive win shares (1.8) and blocks per game (1.1), and Boston should provide plenty of problems for a Washington team that does the bulk of its scoring inside the arc. The Mystics are last in the league in 3-point attempts per game (16.9).
However, Washington's defense is respectable and ranks in the top half leaguewide in points allowed per contest (80.8), 2-pointers given up (20.8), and 3-point percentage allowed (31.9%). The Mystics can pressure a Fever offense that's averaging its fewest points of the season in August (81.5).
These teams hit the Under twice during two previous matchups this campaign, and everything is lining up for that to happen again on Friday.
