🏁 Coca-Cola 600 predictions, expert picks & best bets at Charlotte

The Coca-Cola 600 is the only NASCAR race that runs longer than 500 miles and features three separate stages instead of the usual two.

The 600-mile event is a true test of endurance for both drivers and cars alike, but that isn’t deterring the favorite, Kyle Larson, from running an additional 500 laps in Indianapolis before this race. No driver has won either race while doing double duty.

Charlotte is a 1.5-mile high-speed intermediate. Texas, where the Cup Series races just a few weeks ago, is a mirror image of Charlotte: the two are the series’ only quad ovals on the schedule. Kansas and Las Vegas are similarly 1.5-mile high-speed intermediates, but they’re D-shaped. The significance of an oval’s shape is largely immaterial at such high speeds, so we’ll lean on all three events as comparators.

The high-speed intermediates have provided several late-race surprises this year, but one driver has been the class of the field in every event so far. It only makes sense to trust him to deliver in Charlotte.

🏆 Pick to win Coca-Cola 600: Kyle Larson (+600 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yes, no driver has won the Indianapolis 500 or Coke 600 while attempting both. I think that streak will change this year: Larson’s dominance at high-speed intermediates is simply too much to ignore.

If you’re not betting on Larson at these tracks, you’re either fading him in hopes of late-race chaos or backing his teammates in hopes that one of them gets the best Hendrick Motorsports car that weekend. We used both strategies at Texas and Kansas to no avail, but we at least cashed four plus-money props to soften the blow.

I largely recommended fading Larson that weekend because his odds of +375 were far too short, opening up value down the board. With DraftKings listing Larson at +600 for this weekend, I don’t feel the need to pivot from the No. 5 car. There is value at that price.

While Larson hasn't won every high-speed intermediate this year, he led the most laps in each event. He won from the pole at Kansas, finished ninth at Las Vegas, and fourth at Texas, and he recorded the fastest average green-flag speed in all three as well. His +600 odds - which implies just a 14.3% chance of him winning Sunday's race - are still too long.

💎 Best value bet to win Coca-Cola 600: Josh Berry (+2500 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Four drivers have ranked inside the top 10 in average green-flag speed at the three high-speed intermediate tracks: Larson, Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, and Josh Berry. Of those four, only two have also ranked inside the top 10 by driver rating at those events: Larson and Berry. While Larson is an obvious favorite at +600, Berry is as long as +2500 at FanDuel.

It’s fair to wonder whether Berry’s speed is sustainable. The pace that his quasi-teammates at Team Penske - Blaney, Joey Logano, and Austin Cindric - have all shown suggests it is. Berry won at Las Vegas and Logano won at Texas, giving Ford the most wins at these tracks of all manufacturers. The Blue Ovals’ newfound success at high-speed intermediates is signal, not noise.

Berry has made just one Cup Series start at the Charlotte oval, finishing 10th, but his Xfinity Series resume both here and at comparator tracks gives me plenty of confidence. In 2022, Berry piloted his No. 8 Chevrolet to a win after leading 89 of 200 laps, edging out the likes of Austin Dillon, Ty Gibbs, Ryan Preece, and Noah Gragson. He also has a pair of Xfinity wins at Vegas.

With a $10 bet offering a $250 profit, you can’t leave Berry off your outright card for Charlotte.

🎯 Best long shot to win Coca-Cola 600: Ryan Preece (+6000 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Both Preece and Cindric (+5000) are standout long-shot options at BetMGM. Like Berry, they’re behind the wheel of Fords, which have shown serious speed at high-speed intermediate tracks. While they haven’t finished inside the top 10 in average green-flag speed in all three comparator events, they have come close. Preece ranked 14th, 11th, and 10th in the metric. Cindric ranked seventh, 12th, and 11th.

The upward trend in Preece’s average green-flag speed is a good sign, but it’s just one of several reasons why pricing him at +6000 - which would yield a profit of $600 on a simple $10 bet - is a blunder on the books’ part.

Preece piloted a very questionable No. 5 Ford for B.J. McLeod Motorsports (with some support from Stewart-Haas Racing) to a fifth-place Xfinity Series finish here in 2022. He also nearly won the Truck Series race here that year, but aggressive racing from Carson Hocevar cost him.

After last weekend’s heartbreaking mistake at North Wilkesboro cost him a shot at the All-Star Race, I like betting on Preece to get the job done at this price.

💰 Best Coca-Cola 600 prop bets at Charlotte

We’ll be applying the same approach laid out above to handicap the Coca-Cola 600 prop market. We scored a 2-0 prop sweep at Texas, cashing Ford to win at +330 and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for a top 10 at +1100. We also enjoyed a 2-0 sweep at Kansas, cashing Bowman for a top 10 at +100 and John Hunter Nemechek for a top 10 at +1400.

That framework - trusting guys who show better green-flag speed than their odds reflect - is especially effective at high-speed intermediates, as braking and tire management matter less than at other venues. Let’s dive into the props for this weekend, including one we cashed just a few weeks ago.

🔥 Best prop bet for Coca-Cola 600: Alex Bowman top-10 finish (+100 via ESPN BET) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This wager (at this exact price) was a five-star bet for Kansas, so it’s a five star bet for Charlotte, too.

As I mentioned earlier, Bowman is one of four drivers to rank inside the top 10 by average green-flag speed in every race on a high-speed intermediate so far this season. That speed helped him secure finishes of seventh at Vegas and fifth at Kansas.

Bowman’s day ended early at Texas, but he had climbed to third by the end of the second stage only to get collected in a Bubba Wallace spin. That outlier performance shouldn’t dampen your impression of Bowman. Last year, in six starts at Texas, Kansas, Las Vegas, and Charlotte, Bowman scored four top 10s. He crashed out at Texas, only failing to score a top 10 while running all the laps at Vegas.

Using this nine-race sample of Bowman’s results at high-speed intermediates, we see a 66.7% top-10 rate. This rate skyrockets to 85.7% if we leave out the races where he got caught in an accident. Even if we leave the crashes in the sample, the hit rate far exceeds the +100 (50%) odds we can buy at ESPN BET.

🚀 Best long-shot prop bet for Coca-Cola 600: Jimmie Johnson (+3500 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐

While taking advantage of FanDuel’s top-10 odds at Texas and Kansas was fun, the book has adjusted. Stenhouse, whom we got at +1100 for the former race, is now at +550. Nemechek, whom we got at +1400 for the latter, is now at +900.

Only five drivers sport top-10 odds longer than +1000 over there. As a result, we’re moving to a seriously off-market line posted by DraftKings.

Jimmie Johnson has been awful in the No. 84 Toyota for Legacy Motor Club. Until this year, he had yet to score a top-25 finish in the car over a 13-race sample. He finally broke through with a third-place finish at the Daytona 500 this year, and, as we’ve seen in recent weeks, his teammates haven’t been too shabby, either.

Nemechek and Erik Jones both scored top 10s at Texas in a wreck-and-restart-filled event. Nemechek then managed to hold onto 10th at Kansas, holding off some very good drivers in the process. Johnson, an eight-time winner at Charlotte with 26 top 10s in 39 attempts, will cost you between +800 and +1800 for a top 10 everywhere but DraftKings, where he is an absurd +3500.

📈 Coca-Cola 600 trends & Charlotte Motor Speedway history

Here are a few Coca-Cola 600 trends to consider before betting on Sunday's race at Charlotte.

🏎️ Polesitters tend to end up at the front. Since the NextGen car debuted in 2022, drivers who win the pole for the Coke 600 have an average finishing position of 2.7. Denny Hamlin won from the pole in 2022 and William Byron finished second in 2023.

🏎️ Not the best spot for bowties. No Chevrolet driver has won on the Charlotte oval in the NextGen era, and only two Chevrolet drivers - Larson in 2021 and Dillon in 2017 - have won here in the last 10 races.

💡 How to bet on NASCAR at Charlotte

When handicapping high-speed intermediate tracks like Charlotte, there are a few key NASCAR betting strategy tips to keep in mind:

  • Practice makes perfect. Check out the consecutive lap averages from practice once those numbers go live. Larson won at Kansas after recording the fastest 10-lap average in practice. Logano won at Texas after both of his teammates, Cindric and Blaney, ranked inside the top five in the metric.
  • Wrap your head around 600 miles. The Coke 600 is a real test of endurance. The additional stage and 400 laps give the driver in the fastest car plenty of time to get to the front and build a meaningful lead. The 2021, 2018, and 2016 Coke 600s all saw one driver lead at least 300 laps (450 miles).
