The Montreal Alouettes look to justify their Grey Cup odds when they play the Edmonton Elks tonight at 9 p.m. ET (TSN/RDS, CBSSN) at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta. 🆚 Who will win Alouettes vs. Elks?

Although the Elks have played only one game this season, they still look at least a year away from being a serious contender to reach the CFL playoffs. With their defensive problems, they're going to have a heck of a hard time slowing the Alouettes' efficiency on offense, particularly new CFL Most Outstanding Player odds favorite Davis Alexander.

Edmonton allowed the second-most points (28) and yards per game (392.5) in the league last year and gave up 31 and 448 in their Week 1 loss to the BC Lions. And as dynamic as Tre Ford can be at QB, Montreal's defense is a buzzsaw. I have the Als winning this 30-20.

It's going to take a ton for the Elks to lose this one by less than a touchdown. Their offense managed just 14 points in Week 1 with Ford's magician-like scrambling ability covering up for some major problems on the offensive line. The young QB was also the team's only real threat in the run game, and the Alouettes defense will likely be prepared for that tonight.

Montreal was carried by its defense for much of last year, allowing the second-fewest points per game in the CFL (22.4), and it's looked even better to start this season. The Als are allowing a league-low 14 points and 257 yards per game through two weeks.

If the Elks can't score in the high 20s, how are they possibly going to keep this close? Their defense looks just as bad this year as last year, despite adding Tyrell Ford in the secondary. Montreal has all the tools to exploit the Elks, with Alexander helping the team put up 33.5 points and 396.5 yards per game.

There were glimpses last season when Alexander came in for an injured Cody Fajardo and threw for 1,347 yards and managed nine total touchdowns across parts of six games. Now the former Portland State star is the franchise QB for Jason Maas in the Paris of North America.

Alexander has risen to the occasion as the man guiding a team with Grey Cup aspirations, and he's coming off a career-best 344-yard passing performance against a tough Ottawa Redblacks team. Against the Elks, he should top 302.5 yards once again with Edmonton giving up 324 passing yards in Week 1 to Nathan Rourke after allowing the most passing yards per game in the CFL last year (300).
