The stars of the professional golf world head to Hollywood this week for the 2023 U.S. Open at The Los Angeles Country Club. Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Brooks Koepka are the betting favorites in the U.S. Open odds across our best sports betting apps, and they also land at the top of our U.S. Open power rankings.

Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka have respectively taken down the first two major championships of the 2023 season, but it’s Scottie Scheffler sitting atop the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

The trio headline a loaded field heading to Los Angeles Country Club and the par-70 track can extend to a lengthy and demanding 7,423 yards. Add thick rough, hard and lightning fast greens, and the added pressure of competing for a major championship, and the 2023 edition is sure to have all the theatrics fit for its Hollywood setting.

Now, we wait in anticipation to see who'll play hero in the leading role come Sunday afternoon.

Our U.S. Open power rankings serve as the perfect complement to our U.S. Open picks and U.S. Open sleeper picks.

U.S. Open power rankings

10. Cameron Smith

It’s definitely tough to gauge Smith’s game. He waltzed to a T-9 finish at the PGA Championship with a fancy Sunday 65 that also included him gaining 4.55 strokes putting. Add his three PGA Tour wins last season, including The Players and Open Championship, and he’s rightfully positioned among the secondary favorites to win at LACC this week.

Smith will be competitive this week, I’m just not expecting him to hoist the U.S. Open Trophy.

9. Rory McIlroy

It’s a simple one-two-three punch with McIlroy. One, his game clearly isn’t at top form. Two, he doesn’t need to be firing on all cylinders to compete in most fields at most tournaments. And, three, he can’t win the U.S. Open unless he plays better than he has the past four and a half months.

No one should ever be surprised if McIlroy wins in a loaded field, but it’s also tough to overlook his major championship drought and current form.

8. Patrick Cantlay

Can a California homecoming be the cure for Cantlay’s majors blues?

He’s strung together four consecutive top-15 finishes in majors, including a T-14 at last year’s U.S. Open. The eight-time PGA Tour winner has the statistical game to win anywhere and enters ranked fifth in true strokes gained: tee-to-green in this field across his past 48 measured rounds.

7. Jordan Spieth

It’s rare for Spieth to crack my power rankings and it’s been a long time since his last major victory at the 2017 Open Championship. I’m just encouraged about the direction his game is trending and his five top-5 finishes this season.

Statistically, Spieth has shown a huge recent improvement in his SG: off-the-tee, which has helped him to climb to 16th in true SG: tee-to-green in this field across his past 20 measured rounds. If Spieth continues to position himself to be successful, his short-game wizardry will lead him to a nice position on the leaderboard.

6. Bryson DeChambeau

This track should set up well for DeChambeau. He led the PGA Championship in true SG: off-the-tee and was 11th in SG: approach en route to a T-4 finish. As long as DeChambeau’s short game doesn’t gift strokes to the field, he’s a prime candidate to contend at another major. Don’t forget, he also finished T-8 at last year’s Open Championship and won eight times world wide from 2018 through 2021.

5. Tyrrell Hatton

I expect Hatton to be a popular pick for punters and poolies this week. There are no weaknesses in his game and his recent form is impeccable with six consecutive top-20 finishes while gaining true strokes off the tee and on the greens in each event. My only concern is that while he’s flashed a few times in major championships, he’s largely failed to rise to the occasion when the stage is brightest.

4. Viktor Hovland

The short-game work is finally showing up statistically, as Hovland is actually in the positive in true SG: around-the-green across his past 20 measured rounds. It’s huge because the rest of his game is the envy of the majority of every field he competes against. He’s also finished T-7 or better in each of the past three majors and won the Memorial in his last start.

Hovland’s first major championship is coming.

3. Scottie Scheffler

It’s easy to handicap Scheffler heading into Thursday. He’s going to be in contention because his tee-to-green game is the best in the field. So, if a few putts finally start to fall, he’ll win.

Statistical correction also has to be on his side because while he ranks 113th in true SG: putting in this field across his past 20 measured rounds, he ranked 58th in the metric and fourth in putting average (1.72 putts per green in regulation) last season.

2. Brooks Koepka

Say it with me, Koepka is a majors ATM.

His majors run from the 2015 Open Championship through the 2021 edition consisted of four victories and another 11 top-10 finishes across 22 tournaments. He missed the cut once. So, with Koepka starting this season out with a T-2 showing and a victory on the two biggest stages, it’s safe to say Brooks is back.

Brooks Koepka ranks No. 2 on our U.S. Open Power Rankings.

1. Jon Rahm

Five of Rahm’s PGA Tour wins have come in California, including his 2021 U.S. Open victory. His track record in this event is also strong with T-3, T-23 and T-12 showings bookending his triumph at Torrey Pines. Additionally, I’m not over analyzing his inconsistent play since the Masters and anticipate Rahm rounding into top form for four solid rounds while taking a serious run at winning his second U.S. Open.
