Travelers Championship picks and predictions 2023

Russell Henley first-round leader (+5500)

I generally like to stick with golfers who tee off Thursday morning for my first-round leader picks, but the weather forecast for Cromwell, CT, is showing no clear advantage with scattered showers and consistently low temperatures throughout the day. Therefore, we'll take the value with Henley as a contrarian play with his 12:30 p.m. ET tee time.

Henley leads the PGA Tour this season in driving accuracy (72.68%), and he has averaged 1.31 true strokes gained per round on the field across 18 career rounds at TPC River Highlands. He also tied for 14th in the U.S. Open with 1.49 strokes gained: approach per round, and only eight qualified golfers in this week's field have been more accurate off the tee than Henley across their last 20 measured rounds.

FanDuel is offering odds of +3700 for Henley to hold the 18-hole lead in the Travelers Championship and BetMGM is at +4500. Be sure to seek out this +5500 from DraftKings, Caesars, or PointsBet.

Tommy Fleetwood to win (+3500)

As expected when this article was first published early Monday afternoon, the odds for Fleetwood to win the Travelers Championship dipped across our best sportsbooks by Tuesday afternoon. However, he's now back up to the originally-suggested +3500 odds and a couple of books.

Fleetwood is back up to No. 20 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) following a T-5 finish in the U.S. Open with a final round of 63. Before that, Fleetwood was the runner-up in the RBC Canadian Open, losing to Nick Taylor in a lengthy playoff.

The Englishman excelled with his approach game last week and ranked second to McIlroy with an average of 3.30 true strokes gained: tee-to-green per round. Those have both been strengths of his all season, and he has finishes of T-13 and T-46 in two appearances in the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.

I'd expect these odds to fall closer to the +2500 offered elsewhere as Thursday's tee times approach, as more casual bettors will look to bet based on Fleetwood's strong showing at L.A. Country Club. Take advantage of the +3100 offering from FanDuel while we can.

Tom Kim top rest of world (+1000 via FanDuel)

We haven't had the best results backing Kim to win in 2023. However, I'm on him again this week. At consensus odds around +3500, the best of the number is long gone after Kim opened as high as +5000 to win on Monday. Every golf betting analyst, their grandma, and their dog is seemingly backing the South Korean sensation this week.

Of all the tournaments in which Kim has been an excellent course fit, TPC River Highlands may be the best match. As such, we're pivoting to the top Rest of the World market this week, with considerable variance in the odds. Kim is as low as +650 while listed as the betting favorite in this pool at PointsBet. FanDuel stands far above the competition with a +1000 offering tying Kim for a share of the fifth-best odds in the market.

Kim will be able to lean on his accuracy off the tee (ranks fourth in driving accuracy this season) and sharp iron game at the narrow TPC River Highlands. His 1.93 strokes gained: approach per round last week ranked fourth in the U.S. Open field.

After battling injuries for much of 2023, Kim tied for eighth in the U.S. Open and enters the week at No. 22 in the OWGR. His two wins late last year came on shorter courses of par 70 and par 71, and each win was with a 72-hole score of minus-20 or better. The winning score of two of the last three editions of the Travelers Championship was minus-19.

Credit to Twitter user @TopherThinks for pointing out that Wednesday is also Kim's 21st birthday.

Wyndham Clark top 30 (+115 via FanDuel)

It's a tall order for Clark to win back-to-back in this caliber of field, but FanDuel is offering us another great price for a top-30 finish.

Only FanDuel and DraftKings offer this placing market as of Tuesday afternoon. The latter has Clark listed at +105 so we're getting an extra 10 cents of value in the +115 from FanDuel.

There's no denying Clark relied heavily on a hot putter last week but that will serve him well if he's able to carry it forward one more week. His strong play off the tee and around the greens are also well-suited to TPC River Highlands.

Up to No. 13 in the OWGR and a sudden contender in the FedEx Cup odds, Clark's greatly undervalued in this market.
