2024 British Open Prop Bets & Odds: Royal Troon Set to Challenge Field
The fourth and final major of the 2024 PGA Tour season takes place at the iconic Royal Troon links course in Scotland. With the opening round set for early Thursday morning, we’ve provided prop picks based on the odds from our best golf betting sites, and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is once again sitting as the outright betting favorite by the British Open odds.
Royal Troon is set to test the full bag for each golfer qualified to compete in the 2024 British Open. Scheffler has been enjoying four weeks to prepare since his last outing, which resulted in a playoff win for his sixth outright victory of the year at the Travelers Championship. But as noted in our British Open expert picks, Scheffler has been favored entering each of the three 2024 majors so far while winning only once.
Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and Ludvig Aberg round out the top-five betting favorites at most of the best sportsbooks in the outright winner betting market. All 140 golfers will need to navigate the undulations, pot bunkers, and large red fescue greens to climb the leaderboard at Royal Troon, which is hosting this major for the first time since 2016. That very much includes our British Open long shot picks.
Shots off the tee and on approach may wind up with errant lies due to the severely undulated fairways and tiered surfaces around the greens. Scrambling and putting ability are huge this week, with prevailing coastal winds off of Scotland’s western coast adding another hazard in lieu of water.
Here are our British Open prop picks for Royal Troon based on the odds from our best sports betting sites (confidence rating based on a 1-to-5 star scale).
British Open props
Odds via our best golf betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale.
- Group F winner: Adam Scott (+350 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐
- Tyrrell Hatton to finish top 20 (+100 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Player finishing position: Collin Morikawa to finish Under 17.5 (-120 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Group F: Adam Scott Winner ⭐⭐⭐
Adam Scott’s runner-up finish at the Scottish Open last week was a good sign, considering we hadn't seen the veteran Aussie crack the top 25 since the Charles Schwab Challenge. Now with that momentum and confidence back, Scott should be able to contend for the lowest score in his Group F pairing.
In Group F through FanDuel, Scott is available at +350 odds alongside defending British Open winner Brian Harman, Louis Oosthuizen, Jordan Spieth, and Corey Conners. Oosthuizen is valued as a slight favorite at +320.
Spieth’s success at British Opens is well-documented, but it’s been far from a strong year for the Texas native. Oosthuizen won the 2010 British Open, but he should not be the favorite in this group, while Harman sits 90th off-the-tee and 98th for greens hit in regulation in 2024.
Conners is a ball-striking machine, but his putter can get volatile quickly. Scott ranks 26th in total strokes gained metrics this season, including 31st off-the-tee and 40th in putting. He tends to start slow and finish strong in 2024 while scoring well on par 3 and par 5 holes.
Scott logged a T43 finish at Royal Troon in 2016, but he’s rounding into form, and this group doesn’t present a significant challenge for the Aussie. Let’s stake a half unit on Scott to keep it rolling with the best score in Group F.
Best odds: +350 via FanDuel | Implied probability: 22.22%
Tyrrell Hatton to finish top 20 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tyrrell Hatton being available at even odds for a top-20 finish feels like stealing. The LIV golfer and Englishman is well-versed in playing links courses and previously posted a T5 at Royal Troon back in 2016.
Hatton ranks third in total birdies on LIV in 2024, fifth in scrambling, and 17th for greens in regulation. That's a great combination while trying to conquer a course like Royal Troon. Hatton has logged a T9 at The Masters, T63 at the PGA Chmapionship, and T26 at the U.S. Open.
Based on his success on approach and on the greens, as long as Hatton avoids another final-round implosion like we saw in the previous two majors this year, the Englishman should easily cash this +100 top-20 ticket for us. Hatton also sits sixth in our British Open power rankings.
We recommend staking a full unit on Hatton’s top-20 final placement prop at BetMGM.
Best odds: +100 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 50%
Player finishing position: Collin Morikawa to finish Under 17.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favorite bet of the British Open this year is taking Collin Morikawa to finish under 17.5 on the final leaderboard through DraftKings. This is a unique prop not available at all of our best live betting sites, giving golf bettors a chance to take the Over or Under on a golfer’s final placement.
Morikawa won the Claret Jug in 2021 during his debut at this major while playing at Royal St. George’s. But he's since missed the cut at both St. Andrews and Royal Liverpool. Expect Morikawa to perform much better this week, as he’s recorded nine T16 finishes or better in his last 10 events.
Ranked fifth in total strokes gained (including 16th off-the-tee), second in driver accuracy rate, 39th on approach, and 27th in scrambling, Morikawa possess the skill set to deliver yet another finish inside of the top 17 this week. Previous major results in 2024 are T3 at The Masters, T4 at the PGA Championship, and T14 at the U.S. Open.
This might be a two-unit play, with at least one unit staked on Morikawa’s under 17.5 finishing position player prop on DraftKings. As outlined in our British Open best bets, we're also confident in Morikawa finishing top five, which is avalaible at jucier +350 odds for those feeling more aggressive.
Best odds: -120 via DraftKings | Implied probability: 54.55%
How to bet on golf
Betting on golf involves understanding the various types of bets available and how to assess player performance. First, familiarize yourself with the different types of bets commonly offered in golf, including outright winner bets, each-way bets (which cover both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups between two players, and proposition bets on specific events within a tournament, such as hole-in-one occurrences or individual player performances on certain holes.
Once you've identified the types of bets you're interested in, research the players, course conditions, recent form, and other relevant factors that could influence outcomes. Pay attention to factors like player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may affect a player's performance.
