Power 5 programs playing road games in season openers tend to struggle, but Washington State didn’t falter one bit on the road at Colorado State. With quarterback Cameron Ward throwing for 451 yards and three touchdowns, Wazzu demonstrated its offensive potential in a 50-24 road win over the Rams, pushing its offensive efficiency ranking to 45th in the nation, according to FPI.
Although Colorado State ranks near the bottom of the efficiency table, it really doesn’t seem like oddsmakers are giving much consideration to the Cougars after the team handled its business on the road.
The Cougars' secondary was exploited for 320 yards against Colorado State, but that came due to the game script amid a blowout. Wazzu allowed only 37 rushing yards in the contest. Whether Wisconsin signal-caller Tanner Mordecai can take advantage of passing lanes remains to be seen after he mostly relied upon his running back tandem to pace the Badgers' offense in Week 1.
The Cougars went 5-2 against the spread at home in 2022, including a 2-1 ATS mark as a home underdog. FPI ranks Washington State at 17th in the nation in total efficiency, which is a few dozen spots above Wisconsin. This spread should be different if we trust the limited metrics after one week.
