The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Washington State Cougars haven't met on the gridiron since the 1960s, but they now clash in an interesting non-conference showdown in Week 2. The Red Raiders enter the week as a long shot in the Big 12 championship odds.

Both teams are 1-0, and my Texas Tech vs. Washington State predictions calls for plenty of points given the shootouts each team was involved in to open the season. The Red Raiders held off Abilene Christian 52-51 in an overtime thriller, while Washington State put up 70 points for the first time since 1997 in a 70-30 win over Portland State.

Washington State was left behind after the sudden collapse of the Pac-12. While its schedule consists of mostly Mountain West schools, this is a chance for the Cougars to play a rare game against one of the remaining Power 4 conferences.

Texas Tech vs. Washington State prediction: Week 2

Washington State (-110) ⭐⭐⭐

This pick seems too reactionary to last week given that Texas Tech was one play away from being the victim of the most significant Week 1 upset. But the Red Raiders making the trip all the way out to Pullman gives the Cougars the edge.

No D in Texas Tech

Perhaps it was due to a revenge spot for former Red Raiders quarterback Maverick McIvor, but McIvor became the first Abilene Christian quarterback to throw for 500-plus yards against a Division I school last week.

McIvor completed 36 of 51 pass attempts for 506 yards and three touchdowns. The Wildcats would have completed the most significant upset in program history as more than 30-point underdogs if he didn't get tripped up on the potential game-winning two-point conversation attempt.

This is the same quarterback who completed just 56% of his passes for 1,972 yards and 17 touchdowns during his first full season at Abilene Christian, which suggests Texas Tech’s defense is bound to struggle all campaign.

However, I still think the Red Raiders' offense will do enough as part of my college football best bets for Week 2

Cam Ward who?

Former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward (now at Miami) finished third in the Pac-12 in passing yards (3,735) and fourth in touchdowns responsible for (33) last season. But John Mateer did his best to make Cougars fans forget about what they were missing.

Mateer threw five touchdown passes in the team's season opener while leading the school to 637 yards of offense with eight scoring plays of 30-plus yards.

This line has jumped the fence since Monday, as Texas Tech was a 1.5-point favorite early. Now Caesars is alone among our best sports betting sites while not making you lay points with the Cougars, as all other competitors are at -1 or -1.5.

Just needing Washington State to win outright is a great position to be in, and I'm wagering $10 with the hopes of returning $19.09 if the bet cashes as part of our college football predictions for Week 2.

Texas Tech vs. Washington State player prop

Josh Kelly Over 69.5 receiving yards (-105) ⭐⭐⭐

Josh Kelly should be amped to face his former Washington State teammates. He led the Cougars' fourth-ranked passing attack in receiving yards (923) and touchdowns (eight) while finishing second in receptions (61).

Kelly’s 10 catches in Week 1 for Texas Tech were a career-high, and his 15 targets were three shy of his most in a single game. He established an instant connection with quarterback Behren Morton, and he seems poised to add to his eight career games as a 100-plus-yard receiver after his 156-yard day.

DraftKings offers plus-money odds starting at 80-plus receiving yards, as Kelly to record 80 or more yards is getting +145 odds, and he's receiving +220 for 90-plus yards. However, I'm comfortable with the -105 price for him to eclipse 70 yards, as a $10 winning wager would return $9.52 in profits.
