Who is favored to win the MAC?
On a macro level, one may wonder what it says about the MAC that its most successful coach of the last decade left to take the job at UConn. On a micro level, it will be curious to see if Toledo can maintain its winning standard — the Rockets have not had a losing season since 2009 and have had a losing record in MAC play only once in those 16 years.
Regardless, Toledo should be kept in the contender tier of the MAC until new head coach Mike Jacobs proves otherwise. The former Mercer head coach brought 14 players with him from the Bears’ roster, including running back CJ Miller and star defensive end Andrew Zock.
But the fact of the matter is, Toledo does not return a single defensive starter. And the top of the MAC has somehow found continuity in recent years.
Miami of Ohio and Western Michigan have established themselves above Toledo in the MAC hierarchy. Then again, the Broncos have to follow-up their conference championship with no returning starters in their defensive front-seven. Head coach Lance Taylor’s complementary football last season featured runs on two-thirds of offensive snaps and a defense leading the way.
Without half of that recipe, that leaves one clear choice to win the MAC …

Miami (OH) at +440 at FanDuel
Talk to the most knowledgeable in college football circles, and they will quickly mention Miami’s coffers. Nailing down exact NIL budgets anywhere in college football is a lost cause, but they are obviously small throughout most of the MAC. The RedHawks are outspending the rest of the conference. One can probably guess two or three schools that combined do not match Miami’s outlay.
And it shows most when looking at the RedHawks’ offensive line. It returns three starters, including left tackle Eric Smith. To buttress the other side of the line, Miami simply pulled in third-team All-MAC right tackle Evan Malcore from Northern Illinois. With a backfield filled with transfer running backs, Chuck Martin is going to bully most of the conference into submission.
To further the RedHawks’ joys in 2026, the MAC scheduling matrix broke in their favor, dodging Toledo and getting three of their four middling difficulty games at home. Anytime a contender heads to UMass and Kent State, luck is favoring it in multiple ways.
💎 Best value to win MAC
Eastern Michigan (+1600 at DraftKings)
By playing FBS- and MAC-newcomer Sacramento State in Week 0 (6:30 ET on ESPN+), Eastern Michigan enjoys a schedule edge when it heads to Western Michigan in mid-November. Idle weeks do not actually boost teams’ winning percentages like casual fans convince themselves they do, but getting an off week before that rivalry tilt should allow the Eagles to draw up something unique for the Broncos.
If Eastern Michigan springs that upset as part of a charge through the MAC, Chris Creighton should thank Sacramento State for scheduling its own game against Hawai’i, creating the excuse needed for a Week 0 game.
Anyway, Eastern Michigan leads the conference in returning production by a healthy margin. It returns a veteran and productive quarterback and three of his top four pass-catchers. The Eagles are rarely offense-driven, so seasons when it is the more talented half of the ball are the seasons when Eastern Michigan could turn the MAC on its head.
That returning experience will not balk in one-score games, going 3-3 in them last year including 2-2 in conference play. If that could flip ever so slightly, suddenly the Eagles could be in the title game mix when they spend that idle week studying the Broncos.
📉 Best MAC win totals
Bowling Green Over 4.5 Wins (-150)
On the surface, Eddie George did not take over a disastrous situation in Bowling Green last year. The Falcons had made three straight bowl games under Scot Loeffler. They went 6-2 in the MAC in 2024. But when Loeffler left Bowling Green on the last day of February, he doomed the roster.
In came Eddie George from FCS-level Tennessee State, and the 4-8 record last year was actually mildly impressive.
Now, George adds former Oregon quarterback Austin Novosad. His collegiate career may not have panned out how his recruiting profile expected, but Novosad should still be one of the most talented passers in the MAC.
Combine him with an intriguing defensive middle — take note of end Myles Bradley, tackle Eriq George, middle linebacker Dorian Pringle and safety Kal-el Pascal — and suddenly Bowling Green’s floor is reasonably high.
The Falcons should be decisively better than at least five opponents (Tarleton State, Sacramento State, Ball State, Kent State and UMass) with all five of those games coming at home. A road upset could propel George to a bowl game less than two calendar years after Loeffler packed up his bags and abandoned hope.
Western Michigan Under 7.5 Wins (-135 at bet365)
This will be a tough follow-up act for Lance Taylor, and not to get too existential, but it could be a crucial one for him. Loeffler’s and Candle’s respective exits from the MAC, along with Martin’s 13th year in the conference, show just how hard it is to move up from these particular ranks. If Taylor gets a chance to do so, he needs to strike while the iron is hot.
Last year’s conference championship garnered attention. Falling short of a repeat may doom that proverbial iron.
Western Michigan should thrive offensively in much the same way it did last year, very run dependent and limiting mistakes. But the dearth of returning experience up front is going to put that offense in catch-up scenarios too often for its plodding preferences to overcome.
A non-conference schedule that includes Michigan and Boise State is going to stop Taylor from stacking September wins, and the Broncos drew the short straw in MAC scheduling, facing both Miami and Toledo.
Also considered: UMass Under 2.5 Wins (+130)
This mention is included largely as an excuse to point out that UMass might start the season 3-1 thanks to playing two FCS-level teams in back-to-back weeks in September, hosting both Sacred Heart and Stonehill.
Then again, most analytics considered Sacred Heart better than the Minutemen at the end of the 2025 season.
If considering this Under 2.5 wins on UMass, instead just find a moneyline on the Pioneers on Sept. 12.
