Can the Notre Dame Fighting Irish contend again under new head coach Marcus Freeman? We look at the best ways to bet on Notre Dame this college football season.
There’s a new head coach and starting backfield in South Bend, but one thing hasn’t changed — the Irish are expected to once again be a darkhorse national title contender in 2022.
Much of the defense returns from last year’s 11-1 squad that narrowly missed out on a playoff invite, finishing fifth in the final poll. The Fighting Irish are also already familiar with new coach Marcus Freeman, who oversaw the defense last year and may boast the top tight end in the country in junior Michael Mayer.
Below, we look at the best ways to bet on Notre Dame in 2022 (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and PointsBet).

2022 Predictions for Notre Dame
Over 8.5 regular-season wins (-140)
Notre Dame's season Over/Under win total ticked down from 9 to 8.5 following the news that senior wide receiver Avery Davis will miss the entire season due to a torn ACL in his right knee. That slight adjustment to the line may be the difference in cashing this bet since nine victories looks like a very probable outcome for the Irish this season.
The schedule kicks off with an extremely tough matchup against Ohio State in Columbus in Week 1 and finishes with a road trip to USC in late November. But in between, the Irish will play just two true road games (clashes with Navy and BYU will be on a neutral field) and a visit from Clemson is their only really tough test at home — where Notre Dame has won 30 of its last 31 games.
To make the CFP: Yes (+1100)
Admittedly, a lot needs to go right in order to cash this bet, but that’s typically the case with an 11:1 shot.
Opening the season at Ohio State is no picnic, but if you think the Irish have a chance at the upset, you might as well play this prop instead of betting Notre Dame's moneyline at a +500 price. Even if the Irish fall to the Buckeyes, this bet is still live because Notre Dame can play itself back into the playoff conversation with strong performances against BYU, Clemson, and USC the rest of the way.
Michael Mayer to win the Heisman Trophy (+20000)
Losing Davis for the season is a gutpunch for an Irish attack that is already having to adjust to new starting quarterback Tyler Buchner and has to replace NFL-bound running back Kyren Williams.
But if there’s a silver lining for Irish bettors, it’s the opportunity that it may open for Mayer to stand out even more in this offense. Only two receivers on Notre Dame’s current roster caught more than 20 passes last year, and Williams was also a popular target out of the backfield with 77 catches over the past two years. Coming off an 840-yard campaign in 2021, Mayer could threaten to break the 1,000-yard plateau this season.
If you do decide to take Mayer as one of your Heisman Trophy long shots, make sure you shop around. Many betting sites are offering Mayer in the range of 100:1 to 125:1, but PointsBet listed the junior tight end at 200:1 at the time of writing.
