Virginia’s Governor, Glenn Youngkin, has announced that public schools throughout the state will receive $901 million from the Virginia Lottery.
Lottery profits in Virginia have been going to K-12 public schools since 1999, after the creation of the State Lottery Proceeds Fund. The 2025 fiscal year saw the second-highest profit since the lottery began 37 years ago. It was beaten only by last year, when $934.1 million was generated for the fund.
"I also want to highlight the fact that we have an incredibly efficient operation and that matters because these are the profits. And once prize money is paid out and overhead is covered, this is what's left. And of course, if we allow an overhead to run away like it does in so many organizations, this number goes down. And so again, I want to thank all of the lottery personnel for the great work you all do in watching every penny. Because when you watch every penny, it means more goes to the kids," the Governor said.
Profits in the 2025 fiscal year totaled over $5.7 billion in sales from retail and online operations, with $4.5 billion of that going back to players. Residents are clearly taking advantage of Virginia sportsbook promos.
Michigan raises $500M for education fund
Virginia isn't the only state with high revenues generated for public schools. Michigan reported that in 2024, around $500 million was generated for its School Aid Fund. Of this total, around 80% came from taxes generated by Michigan sports betting apps and Michigan online casinos.
Two smaller funds that focus on the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction will also receive gambling tax revenue. One of the funds is the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund, a collaboration between the Michigan Gaming Control Board, the state’s health department, and the Michigan Lottery.
While this total will benefit K-12 schools, concerns have been raised as the state's problem gambling help line has also seen an increase in calls, with gambling critics citing growing addiction to online gambling as a problem.
Virginia casino revenue hits $59.5 million in June
As Virginia’s lottery continues to produce millions in revenue, the state’s casino industry has also had a successful month. In June, Virginia casinos saw increased profits year-on-year, rising 31.9% from $59.5 million to $78.5 million. The state doesn't have a real-money online casino market.
Of this amount, $59 million came from slots, and the remaining $19.5 million came from table games such as blackjack and roulette. Caesars Virginia recorded the highest revenue for the month, reporting $30.6 million, representing a 59.1% increase compared to the previous year.
In June 2025, $14.1 million was paid in total tax, with $9.3 million going to the Gaming Proceeds Fund, $4.7 million going to the casino host city, $112,996 was given to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, and $28,249 going towards the Family and Children’s Trust Fund.
