Court's In Session: Week of 9.22.08
1st match probably goes off in the wee hours around 2-3am ET. Second match will be an early morning kicker at maybe 8 am on Tuesday.

    ATP - Thailand Open 9.23

    Stadler +160 vs. Benneteau
When Benneteau is right, he can be a threat. That being said, there is absolutely zero value with Benneteau at this price IMO (-200). He has been in putrid form for most of the year & you have to question his fitness/desire at this point. He hasn't won a match since June & that was on grass. Stadler won't be mistaken for a top flight player, but he's at least been on-court recently & winning some. He got thru the qualis here with a couple wins & played well here last year pushing Ivo Karlovic to 3 sets in the Round of 16. Even if Benneteau somehow finds some form out of the blue, Stadler should be able to stick with him and make this a close match. The price is right.

    WTA - China Open 9.23

    Zheng +145 vs. Radwanska
Good value here on Zheng who has enjoyed a good run since Wimbledon despite not playing a ton of tennis. That may be to her advantage though with fresh legs + confidence from making the semis last week in Bali & taking Jankovic to 7-5, 7-5 in her loss at the US Open in the 3rd round. Radwanska played in Tokyo last week & looked like she would be hard to beat after easing past Sugiyama & Bartoli. Nadia Petrova ridiculed her though after Radwanska had beaten her twice previously. The key for Radwanska seems simple as shown in her last two losses to Petrova & Venus Williams at the US Open. 2nd serve. She has been under 25% in those losses where she is close to 46% otherwise on the year. Zheng suffered the same fate, so perhaps the 2nd serve points are just as key for her. Radwanska has beaten Zheng twice, including a 3 setter in Dubai back in February. That was in the qualis & Radwanska was definitely the "in-form" player of the two after her great start to the season. Zheng has the added bonus of playing in her home country & on a court where she might have an edge having played here before. My thinking is Radwanska might be a little gassed from a full year of tennis (19 tourneys), while Zheng (12 tourneys) has picked her spots & with fresher legs & the home crowd looks like a nice price here to me.

Nice hit with Stadler at a good price. Looks like Bennetaeu packed it in after a tough 1st set.

Yeah. Benneteau just hasn't played hardly any tennis, so this was a good spot. Waiting for the other one to start. I think it starts shortly.

Tough to say. The thing I don't like about Meltzer is that he went and played a couple matches on grass after the US Open & now has to reacclimate to hard court. DY hasn't played since the epic with James Blake in NY, so he could be rusty.

My general rule is to never play a single match at anything more than maybe -170 to -175. Once you get to that -200 threshold on players who are in maybe the top 50-75, but not always solid, seems like weird things happen occassionally with favorites losing & it's an awfully big hit to take on players who aren't always models of consistency.

For the -220 price or so, I'd rather risk Troicki over Santoro who was absolutely miserable against Roddick in NY and has played only two matches on hard courts this fall and been beaten soundly by A-Rod & a wildcard entry at Indy. Troicki played well in DC & then at the Open made it three rounds to prove his back was OK after an earlier withdrawal. He did get beat by a nobody last week though in the Slovakia vs. Serbia matches. So take that for what it's worth.

                  ATP - China Open 9.24

                  Sela -170 vs. Devilder

I'm not sure how anyone could feel confident in backing someone who has played a grand total of 5 hard court matches in all of 2008. That's what you get with Devilder & he's won just 2 of those matches. Also figure in that he went back to clay after playing the hard court at the US Open & he could struggle to adapt back to the surface. Sela meanwhile looks to have done himself a favor by playing a couple extra hard court matches last week for Team Israel. Both are similar in their slight builds & ability to run down shots, I just think Sela plays the surface better and think he will fight his way through.

                  WTA - Korea Open 9.24

                  Craybas -155 vs. Amanmuradova
Amanmuradova & her last opponent, Marta Domachowska, put on a stunning double fault display in their 1st round match. Amanmuradova took the gift from the young Pole (20+ double faults for the match) to advance. Amanmuradova had her own double fault issues with double digits. Craybas meanwhile double bageled her opponent & seems to be in a decent groove still from the tourney last week. Throw in Craybas winning the head-2-head battles twice already this year - the easier win coming on a similar speed court at Pattaya - and I think the price for Craybas seems about right. If she can avoid getting into trouble with her second serve, I think Craybas makes it 3 straight vs. the young Uzbeki.

                                  WTA - Korea Open 9.25

                                  Kirilenko -150 vs. Safarova

These two ladies had similar lulls in the late summer after playing well in early August. Both got needed wins in basically tune-up matches in the 1st round here. Kirilenko though has the edge with the better 1st & 2nd serve over Safarova. The 2nd serve % especially is noticeable in Kirilenko's wins over Safarova (3 of them) and vice versa that Safarova struggles mightily in that category when she loses. If Kirilenko has found her game again - remember she made a run to the 4th round of the Australian - then she will be tough to beat in this one.

... By the way, top seeded David Ferrer continued his pathetic 2008 campaign losing to Dudi Sela in his first match in Beijing. Sela was +415 in this one.

                                              Rematch from Wimbledon, oh snap!

Now Ana can avenge herself, this might get her back on track psychologically, she'll blast Zheng off the court in straight sets without dropping a service game.

Pinnacle has Zheng at +158 & Ana at -168. I can't play Ana until she wins two straight at any tourney. Zheng has given her trouble in both head-2-head matches. Zheng is hot too. Probably a no play for me, but value-wise it's Zheng.

couple matches i like tomorrow ATP:

roddick in straight 2-0. hopefully line will be around -140 or less.

                                                    robredo in straight 2-0.

i cant believe that meltzer is +135 against tsonga.

                                                    eagles any thoughts on it?

I'm not eagle (great streak btw ) but I watched Roddick-Evans. I think he didn't play well and the main reason why he beat Evans so easily was because Evans played crap. He (Evans) had about 20 unforced errors while Roddick had only 1 (?) winner or so (good chance I mixed something up with the Ferrer-Sela-match). There was just one thing, which was really good about Roddick's game today: his service. Ferrero meanwhile beat Verdasco in straight sets which btw really suprised me. So I wouldn't count on Roddick on beating Ferrero in straight sets.

Robredo in straight looks good for me, Ferrer played even worse than in Daviscup against Roddick when Roddick killed him in the second set. I think Sela played solid but nothing special. Mostly he just had to wait for Ferrer to make an unnecessary error for an easy point.

Sorry for my crappy english, I usually don't write/speak it (I'm from Austria).

Sweet. This is turning into a good discussion thread! Let me just say that I've been looking at the matches for tonight/tomorrow & I am finding it rough to find definitive edges at good prices.

My thoughts on the ones you guys have talked about:

Roddick/Ferrero: Roddick has dominated the head-2-head, but a price of -425 is way too rich for me to even consider. Thing I hate about set betting is having to root for that or get screwed. Truth is Roddick was on the ropes last night in the 1st against Evans, down 4-2 with Evans on-serve ... but he did come through. This is a no play for me in any shape or form.

Robredo/Sela: This actually I think will be a fun match between two guys who can run down just about any shot. Don't forget Sela won the only career match-up earlier this year in Miami. I think Robredo wins because it's hard to know just what form Sela is in because as stated - Ferrer blows - so I won't be surprised to see Sela push Robredo to three. And certainly an upset at this price isn't all that unexpected.

Tsonga/Meltzer: Again a topsy-turvy choice here. Tsonga clearly has all the tools, but health is the issue. Meltzer is playing his best tennis at this point, but Tsonga may be flashing the form that made him in the Australian Open. Tsonga won a match-up between the two in the spring, but is he in shape? This smells like a 3 setter & really still seems like a coin flip, although I would probably lean slightly to Tsonga.

Today to me looks like a good day to parlay up some of the bigger favorites.

                                                            Ladies: Kanepi, Kirilenko, Zvonareva

Those three look like the best bets to me, but I wouldn't play any of them singularly at -250 and above.

Ivanovic is now at -161 @ Pinnacle.

Eagles, what do you think of Stosur-Makarova? Stosur had problems winning against Lisicki while Makarova won her matches easily. I kinda like Makarova at +120.

I bet with virtual money (competition ) on Ferrero, the price for Roddick doesn't seem right to me for what he showed against Evans. Andy also said in an interview, that he felt the jetlag, so I think, it's gonna be tighter than the odds are saying.

Sela had two Daviscup-Matches where he played in total 8 sets while Robredo didn't have any Daviscup duties. So Sela played on Sep 19, 21, 24 & 25 with flying from Israel to China in between. I wonder if he is tired.
Just some additional thoughts, I'll pass on Roddick & Robredo on their prices.

Definitely if I was playing that match, I'd take the better price and Makarova. Stosur has struggled a little with her 1st serve. It looks like the key will be 2nd serve. However, she did struggle with her serve a tad in her last match against Lisicki. Makarova meanwhile picked up where she left off at the US Open (3rd round) & has won easily in her first two matches. Both are capable and this will be a tough one, but if Makarova stays hot on her first serve & can make Stosur pay on her 2nd serve - the Russian has a nice shot.
