Not just B365. It's pretty well been industry standard for a few years now amongst the major books. If first set is completed the match is decided. Prior to that voided.

As I can't bet more than a few peanuts at B365 I haven't used them for tennis.
So it seems that perhaps they haven't yet joined the likes of Pinnacle, Betfair, Matchbook etc in introducing the fist set completed rule. I know a number of the lesser books require the match to be completed.
Are you a regular B365 tennis bettor? Is this inconsistent with your past experience there?
What do their rules have to say?
Match Betting Including In-Play
In the event of a match starting but not being completed then all bets will be void unless after the start of the match a player is disqualified in which case the player/team progressing to the next round or being awarded the victory will be deemed the winner for settlement purposes.

Bet 365 since ancient history grade tennis as VOID in case any player retires at any time of match.

But they do pay out tennis bets that could not have lost had the match played out naturally.
Probably best set of tennis rules for players there is.

And they of course grade UNDER 38.5 a loser if it's 6-4 4-6 7-6 3-6 and someone retires in the 5th set? (if you have a better example of this, I'm keen to hear it)
Are rules any different for in-play and pre game tennis bets, or are they treated exactly the same?

Just use the same case but holding the Over 38.5 instead of the under. You would be paid as a winner.
Does it really bother you more being graded a loss instead of a lucky void for a bet that is already guaranteed to lose but for a retirement... or to not be paid for a bet that could not lose but for a retirement?
I think that rule is advantageous to the player any wy you look at it.
Not 100% sure about the live rules off top of my head. Think they are one of the few books that do use same rules for pre-match and live for most things but don't have access to in-play as an Aussie so the info has not stuck with me.

I understand voiding total and handicap bets. I don't get voiding money line bets after a completed set. Pregame money line bets.

There is a list of books with their retirement rules in this thread
A lot do have action after 1 set but even more require match complete. It's not like there is really any common standard.
But it is useful to have a choice, so we can choose a match complete book if our player is a bit fragile or has an injury cloud, or a 1 set book if the opponent is that way.

Means they're less vulnerable to fixers retiring to lose. You'll note a lot of players retire after losing the opening set - it's because the bet is then valid at Pinny and Betfair.
Bet365 have the problem that they offer lots of futures and lower level ITF, which pinnacle don't - the temptation to fix at that level is much greater, because prize money is so little.
