Think twice before you name your kid what you think is unique or strange
when teaching years ago year after year I noticed that kids with strange or unique names were often the kids that had behavior problems or learning problems. It was so far over the norm that I even mentioned it to other educators. Then years later I read an article that claims the exact same thing.

Before you hang a unique name on your child realize that it may cause problems later in life. Of course what was strange or unique 10 or 15 years ago may now be close to normal.

    Just a thought guys.

Yeah seems to be far too many Apple's, Peaches, Harper 7's etc - and thats just the kids of famous people, really makes you wonder why everyone is so determined to call their kid something different. Whatever was so wrong with the likes of John, Jack, Dave, Adam etc !

Just give them a unique name that has an easy abbreviated nickname, preferably 1 syllable

I love the people who name their kids after things theyll never be able to afford. And for boys, the name may be cute now, but think about when their 30 and if anyone is going to take them serious with the name angel ( #52 on the list for boys names in 2012)

Really, how is that comparison even valid? I knew this wouldn't get many responses but I just was attempting to provide you people with some insight because obviously many parents don't consider the cross they are giving to their kids when baptizing them "Tuesday", "forever" and "not me".
And dante is a fairly popular name especially in Italian households. But, that was the name of my dog.

I think parents in an attempt to start their kids on the road to being "special" make this mistake. Often those kids are special because they get teased and they often become a special problem in class. I am sure many of you guys have teacher friends, ask them about this issue especially if they have been teaching for any length of time. I am sure many of them will relate the exact same story I have just told.

In Costa Rica, it is becomingly increasingly popular for poor families to give their babies American names. It's annoying, because they don't pronounce them right anyway. It was hard picking an American name that my wife and I liked for our son, that locals could also pronounce the correct way.

Ok I'll address the 800 pd gorilla in the room. It isn't middle class people naming their kid Johan or hippies naming their kid Starburst that this is relevant to. It's uneducated black women that name their keed after the company that makes the hospital bed she gave birth on, or the women who make up some word that includes a Q and a Y and preferably starts with La. They were dumb enough to not care about their kid and give it a respectful name, and what a surprise their kids aren't geniuses and don't end up getting straight A's and being model students and citizens. Chicken or the egg?

Try growing up named Eike, Sheldon, and Rupert. They're some of the richest people in the world.

Then there's Moon, Joaquin, Eldrig, etc. who seem to be doing well.

I taught in an almost all white rural district and the black student was rare. I imagine that minorities probably do this to a greater extent but it is not just their domain. Some of these names I am sure originate and belong to old family and nationality norms. Just like Dante, obviously that is a name not very familiar to at least one poster but in an Italian area it is quite common. I don't mean those names.
I am talking about really strange names, often common words but words never associated with names. It is difficult for me to remember many of these names but I do remember that those kids almost always had either an academic problem, social problem or behavior problem. I can't definitely say that this was the reason but it may have been a factor. Also, maybe a factor is the fact that parents that think burdening a child with a name like that may not be the brightest so it could also be partly genetic. Who knows for sure, I just think naming a kid something so far out is at the very least questionable.

Yeah I see what ur saying. These names could come from parents that are idiots or parents that are geniuses that think differently. Either way having this genetic disposition does not foster fitting in.

I know a family who have 3 sons, named Travisie, Blakie, and Evanie. This is a trend I have noticed lately, too many parents are adding the "ie" to their boy's names. It may be cute when they are little babies, but when they grow up, are you sure its still a good idea?

Also I went to school with a girl named Abcd, pronounced "Absidee", no I am not making it up

And I worked with a girl named P-A, pronounced "Pordasha". Again, not making it up.

And I volunteered at a kids camp one time, which was 75% hispanic, the most common girls names were Rihanna, Aaliyah, and Beyonce. I guess its popular in the hispanic community to name your daughter after black R&B artists.

About 5 yrs ago my brother named his boy Bane. And just recently named his daughter Solara after the movie 'Book of Eli'.

My brother is kind of a fuking idiot.
