i was there summer of last year and at night it was filled with drunk black dude and some gangsters smooking weed on the main strip.

I lived in that area last year (newport news). Certain areas stay out of. Newport news is not a real safe area. Try not to go in if you don't have to. There are lots of things to do down there though.If you golf make sure you hit a course in Williamsburg. Priced high to golf there but its real nice. The town of smithfield has a nice course and it is priced nice. There are also some courses right by VA Beach that are nice. If you like to fish get out on a boat and do some fishing. You are surrounded by water down there and it is all salt water. If you have kids their is a museum in Chesapeeke that is cool for kids, I took my son their he enjoyed. Check out a Norfolk tide minor league baseball game if you can also. If you like history stop by yorktown and check out the battle fields from the cival war. Pretty cool to see the canons still sitting in the field and the pop up cemeteries where they would just bury people when they passed during the war. There is alot of war museums also in the area. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to go anywhere the traffic sucks down there. Try and stand clear of the hampton roads tunnel if you can, usually between 10 am all the way through the day it is backed up. I have sat in that crap plenty of times coming back from the beach.
