Dog Won't eat or drink after Surgery
So I own a male German shephard (10 years old) and he had a tumor growth inside on the left side of his mouth. Poor fella was suffering so I took him to a vet got a surgery scheduled and they removed it yesterday. It was a same day thing dropped him off in the morning picked him up around 6:00 pm. Of course due to the anesthesia he couldn't walk and I had to carry him to and out of my car. He pretty much slept all night to the morning and continues sleeping. Vet said it was ok to feed him in the morning. Gave him food and water in the morning but he still won't eat or drink. won't even open his mouth. I'm worried that the lack of water can dehydrate him. the vet's office is closed and I can't get in contact with the guy. So any suggestions? What do I do should I wait a few more hours or schedule an appointment with another vet?

Wait till next morning and see what happens. He's probably just still feeling the effects of the surgery.

just went out and got him some milk and he took a couple licks of the milk but thats about it. Also tried to crush the pain medication and throw it in his mouth. He only swallowed half and threw out the other half. Its apparent that he has pain on the side the tumor was cut from. Will give him his antiobiotics as well as his pain medication again in the evening. Brought him inside from the heat. Got him sleeping next to me on the floor on a mat. Hopefully he turns out okay

gave him a little bit of soft food he took maybe 3-4 licks and couldn't continue eating. I could tell his hungry but can't eat due to the pain. hand fed him an antibiotic with a spoon through his mouth he swallowed about half threw out the other half. let him out in the backyard walked around a bit peed in a couple spots and is back to laying down. Definitely better than this morning but he still isn't himself and is still suffering from pain. I am worried that he might infect his mouth as he has been lickin his fur continously as well as itching his mouth with his front legs.

It is probably in pain but it will get better. Animals know how to deal with it.

Back when plommer was a kid he had a mixed breed lab/beagle, we took him to the vet and after surgery the dog would no longer fukk.

                          True story.

Poor fukker lost interest once his balls were surgically removed, go figure.

Just keep reminding him you're there. I have a 4 year old pup, she means the whole world to me. Sometimes when she's laying next to me I think about the time when she's eventually too old or sick and how hard I'm going to take it.

Had judge judy on the other day and some lady was talking about loving her dog as much as she would her own kid and judy thought that was the most ridiculous thing. Unless you're a dog person like us, you don't even know how much they mean to you.

he is almost fully recovered. thank you for the support everybody. their is now a huge opening on where the tumor was on the side of his mouth and he still has trouble eating especially when trying to bite.
