    Craigslist Question
Alright SBR, this is a serious question, looking for serious answers.

Selling an item on CraigsList for $1,000. This schmuck wants to buy it and send me $1,050 via paypal for $50 to take care of the USPS shipping because he's on a business trip in the UK. This is item is worth about $1,500.

CraigsList likes when people handle the transaction face-to-face. However, this guy wants it to be a surprise for his wife for when he returns. He claims he'll send the $ via paypal first.

I have a paypal account and am aware that payments can be reversed, should I trust this guy? How can I go about insuring I don't get screwed? He's overpaying in my opinion and I would love to get rid of this thing.

Take the payment, remove the money and then send him his item

Sell it to him through ebay as a buy it now. You pay seller fee for the security of documented transaction.

God I hope you haven't gone through with this yet. If guy uses a fake bank account (which he 100% is) when the funds are charged back it's taken out of your account, even if you've withdrawn they'll put your PayPal account at a negative. If you don't make your balance positive they report it to credit agencies. Credit will indeed take a nice hit.

Even if you seell on eBay it doesnt do shit for you.. He can always say you sent a pile of trash or that the item isnt what he expected and he gets money back. If they ask him to send the item back which he does he will send trash and keep the item and cash back. This is Paypal saying this now.. Paypal is the only way to get a dispute so selling on eBay wont cover you for shit....

Absolutely, as a seller through Ebay/Paypal you are bent over a barrel, buyer has any and all leverage.

If he send the PayPal as a GIFT. Check the gift box he won't be able to reverse it or complain about it.

This is the way to go, but you absolutely have to make sure you use delivery confirmation through USPS otherwise you can still get screwed. I emailed tickets once after money was in my paypal account and in process of being transferred to bank account when payment was reversed and under investigation. I did not qualify for seller protection because I did not have tracking information even though the tickets were emailed through ticketmaster and I had confirmation from ticketmaster that the buyer received and printed the tickeets.

It doesnt protect you against the items within that box. So yeah you can send the confirmation number along with the package... but if he wanted to scam your ass he still could. Dont think that paying an extra .75 cents will prevent you from getting scammed or that those .75 cents will ensure you protection against this scam.. IT WONT.

Because I emailed the item and had no tracking number showing it was mailed to the paypal verified address, they reversed the funds. It's all in how the Paypal seller protection policy is written. Follow it to a "t" and they can't steal your money.

Now whether you send a box of shit or a 30 million dollar gold chain is another thing.. This is what eBay nor Paypal can confirm which is why they ask for you to do everything possible so that if a dispute is opened, you have all the required documents etc...
