I have a tmobile hotspot and just canceled. found an app called "FoxFi" best app out on the market so far. turns your phone into a hot spot (without rooting it) and you can connect to your 3g or 4g service from tablet or laptop. no more monthly charges for hotspots.

Yep these hotspot devices will be a thing of the past soon. Even those 'rocketsticks' or usb 3g devices.

iPhone, and android devices already have built in/downloadable apps to convert your phone into a mobile hotspot (for most devices at least)

Blackberry is a little slow (as it seems they've been the past 5 years) but their next OS revision 7.1 includes the mobile hotspot feature built in for capable devices. Confirmed and released in some regions but unfortunately for me in Canada and freakin Rogers I'm stuck waiting.
