    Question about addiction
As gamblers, we are probably all addicted, most of us probably hopelessly addicted. But why gambling? It seems to me that addiction is controlled by a part of the brain, but why are certain people addicted to certain things and not to others? Like for instance, I smoked weed a bit in college, I drank until I passed out 3-4 times a week in college... yet I haven't smoked weed or gotten drunk in probably a year. Why did I not become addicted to those things but I have made some kind of bet every day of my life the last 6 years? I could go the rest of my life without touching weed or alcohol if I wanted to, but I couldn't survive until next week without gambling? Anyone else that same way?

I am not addicted to anything. My mind can control what I need and don't need. I am not a sicko.

I have not gambled in a week. I quit smoking after 5 years because I was bored with it, cold turkey, decided I didn't want to anymore and stopped. I have been drunk 4 times since the 1st of the year.

if you started taking benzos or pills before you gambled thatd probably be your addiction right now. its all relative.

I get posters here confused sometimes but aren't you 300 pounds? You have to be addicted to food if I'm thinking of the right person. You don't become 300 pounds without a food addiction.

Gambling + Pills or Benzos is the best .....Not recommended more than once or twice a month though

I just enjoy smoking a little green stuff sitting back capping and relaxing

And EVERYONE has an addiction. Some people are just too stubborn to admit it.

I used to enjoy the hell out of some green, but now I am looking for a new job and can't do it because it stays in your system so long.....But pills and benzos stay in for like 3 days so I'll do a little of that here and there if I want to chill and don't have any interviews immediately coming up (Not much- few times a month)

It's ironic that drug testing for weed by employers gives those that would normally just smoke a little weed here and there do harder shit for their fix just because it's out of your system in a matter of days......I know guys that do coke alot just for this reason and don't smoke weed because they get tested at work

gambling has constant swings....if its hoops the score is constantly changing.....teams go on runs....your financial worth is on the line with every play even if they are small plays....drinking alone can be fun once in awhile....but when you gamble you are really always alone...its you against the line.....

totally hear you about going without booze or any drugs...but needing some action.....theres obvious differences between drugs/booze and gambling though

For me I think it's more about sports. Watch and listen to sports all freekin day.

My addiction is to sports not gambling. I would still watch a game if I didn't have $$ on it. I would have serious issues if this changed.

Addiction is all relative....my dad can't stop buying tractors and tools, legitimately he has about 12 sitting in our yard, and I'm not talking little home depot specials, I'm talking backhoes with 4wd, multiple Kubotas and John Deere with 20, 25, 30 hp engines, those are no small deals either.

You might say he needs them to make a living, but trust me, his line of work has absolutely nothing to do with heavy equipment and machinery

like anything else. there are the cycles of gambling. hopefully you have a couple cents left to your name when you hit rock bottom. Im of the younger age so i have seen it, but my father preaches to me to never gamble. he says he is "lucky he makes a lot of money." he goes to foxwoods every weekend. I've never really studied genetics at a higher level just honors HS classes etc. but do you guys think that your upbringing has to do with your behaviors? I have an addictive personality. probably mroe than anyoen youve ever seen. I worked all summer sold some green stuff all so i could purchase over 2k worth of sports cards.i was 15. lol

This. Although gambling makes me watch more sports and teams than I would normally have interest in if I didn't have a wager on them. It's like going to bar. Sure you can go to socialize and whatever, but it's a lot more fun if you put back a few drinks as well.

No one should go a week without working out, let alone a year.

K, let me rephrase... go 1 year without lifting weights.

He can do cardio. Pitching in college, I messed up my labrum and haven't gotten around to fixing it, so I don't do much outside of cardio but I play basketball and run and do pushups, etc. Never understood the meat heads at the gym who get the big muscles but probably couldn't catch a football or basketball if I passed it to them.

This seems to be what your questioning. I would think it has to do with the how you're wired, how your brain works... everyone is wired differently right? Some people enter adulthood (or leave college) with an addiction to alcohol, some to weed, some gambling, and some to all 3. Not saying it's good to be addicted to just one, but better than all 3. Your brain, and many others here love the thrill of making money via betting way more than anything else... although you smoked lots of pot and drank lots of booze, your brain probably never enjoyed it as much. Some people are screwed though, imagine being completely and hopelessly addicted to all 3. Booze is my biggest vice, but I love action too, fortunately I keep it in check though... idk, gl though.

I used to drink daily and know I only drink socially once or twice a week. Lately its the benzos though. I was prescribed them for anxiety and they help out a ton, especially when I'm having trouble sleeping. I've only been on them for like 8 months and my tolerance has skyrocketed. I used to take like .5 ** of xanax and feel full effects. Now I am taking 4mg. I'm gonna try and get out of this soon before its too late. I think i'm a gambler for life though
