I went down to the local pawn shop yesterday to pick up my rings and a gold rope.
What I didn't realize was that I accidentally let one of my rings expire. I was supposed to pick it up on February 5th. It's a small pinky ring with a 5ct ruby set in 22K yellow gold. Ruby was all natural with no dye or color added; it's also my birth stone. That's why I bought it at MJ Christensen for a little under $1000.
I explained to the guy that I had renewed the ring on December 19th before going back to Seattle for Xmas. The guy looked in the computer and it turns out that I had renewed a more expensive diamond ring on that day and picked up the gold rope (That went back in the day of the Superbowl). I did not renew the Ruby ring like I thought I had.
So I ask the guy if there is anything he can do. Can I buy it back at a higher price or at retail?
He says that he will check the computer to try and track down the ring. They often send merchandise to other stores. He was actually willing to work with me even though I had let it expire.
Then out of nowhere, the manager comes up, presses a few buttons on the keyboard and says, "Sorry, that ring was sent to our melting facility in Texas on the 9th."
According to her, not only has it been sent out of the state, but it has been sent half way across the country. Not only has it been sent half way across the country, but it has been sent to a melting facility half way across the country.
Now understand, I have been in sales for a long time and I understand these bullshit one-liners that we come up with to diffuse a situation. My guess is, she is spoon feeding me this shit and has no intention of doing anything to help me get the ring back. I'm assuming that it's probably sitting in their safe directly in front of me, or has been shipped to another store. The ring is worth a hell of a lot more than the $150 they gave me for it.
If it was sent to another store, you might think that they would be happy to tell me where it is because I have offered to buy it back a retail. Problem is, if they tell me where it is, I might go down to that store and cause a big fukkin scene. Then that store might call the other store and say, "WHAT THE ****??? Why did you tell that asshole where the ring was??"
My question is, is she full of shit and just feeding me this end-all one liner to avoid a potential heated situation that she has probably dealt with several times before, or do these melting facilities actually exist?
It's a nation wide chain. EZ Pawn.
