Anybody here work at a pawn shop?
I went down to the local pawn shop yesterday to pick up my rings and a gold rope.

What I didn't realize was that I accidentally let one of my rings expire. I was supposed to pick it up on February 5th. It's a small pinky ring with a 5ct ruby set in 22K yellow gold. Ruby was all natural with no dye or color added; it's also my birth stone. That's why I bought it at MJ Christensen for a little under $1000.

I explained to the guy that I had renewed the ring on December 19th before going back to Seattle for Xmas. The guy looked in the computer and it turns out that I had renewed a more expensive diamond ring on that day and picked up the gold rope (That went back in the day of the Superbowl). I did not renew the Ruby ring like I thought I had.

So I ask the guy if there is anything he can do. Can I buy it back at a higher price or at retail?

He says that he will check the computer to try and track down the ring. They often send merchandise to other stores. He was actually willing to work with me even though I had let it expire.

Then out of nowhere, the manager comes up, presses a few buttons on the keyboard and says, "Sorry, that ring was sent to our melting facility in Texas on the 9th."

According to her, not only has it been sent out of the state, but it has been sent half way across the country. Not only has it been sent half way across the country, but it has been sent to a melting facility half way across the country.

Now understand, I have been in sales for a long time and I understand these bullshit one-liners that we come up with to diffuse a situation. My guess is, she is spoon feeding me this shit and has no intention of doing anything to help me get the ring back. I'm assuming that it's probably sitting in their safe directly in front of me, or has been shipped to another store. The ring is worth a hell of a lot more than the $150 they gave me for it.

If it was sent to another store, you might think that they would be happy to tell me where it is because I have offered to buy it back a retail. Problem is, if they tell me where it is, I might go down to that store and cause a big fukkin scene. Then that store might call the other store and say, "WHAT THE ****??? Why did you tell that asshole where the ring was??"

My question is, is she full of shit and just feeding me this end-all one liner to avoid a potential heated situation that she has probably dealt with several times before, or do these melting facilities actually exist?

It's a nation wide chain. EZ Pawn.

The whole time I was reading this I was thinking that she was full of shit and just trying to diffuse a situation. I was thinking that it was a mom and pop shop though. Now that you say it is a chain it is highly likely that she isn't lying to you. The contract technically did expire so if she really wanted to she doesn't have to say a word to you because it is their property now. If I was you I'd probably go back and make a scene to see if you have any luck with that, but honestly I wouldn't have high hopes.

Either way I wish you the best. BOL

I can't really go down there and cause a scene. They will call the cops. Not only that, but they are the only pawn shop in town that will give me strong $$$ for my diamond ring.

I took it to several other pawn shops, including the one on the strip where they film the show Pawn Stars. The most I have been offered is $400 from Superpawn.

EZ Pawn will give me $1100....and maybe a little more if I press it.

It's kinda handy havin' the ring. If I'm ever short of some cash, I can always get some. I usually only borrow $300 - $400 so that I can get it back without it denting my income too much.

I tried to find their facility on the internet but didn't come up with anything.

I'm gonna head over to a couple of their other locations this weekend and see if by chance the ring is on display.

I called a couple other EZ Pawn stores and asked some random questions to find out if they actually melt expired jewelry.

Indirectly, both stores told me than they do melt jewelry and that the facility is in Texas.

I asked what happens when gold jewelry expires. "Does it get sold? Does it go to another store?"

They both said, "It depends. We either put it up for sale or melt it."

              "Where does it get melt?"

              "I believe its in Texas."

That ring is gone. I will have to find something to replace it. Maybe I'll get some kind of pendant with a small ruby and put it on the gold rope.

Still cant believe I let it slip through my fingers like that. At least I still got my high dollar ring back.

You ever thought about getting a PLOC or something, so you don't have to hock personal possessions when you need cash.

those m.f. they may have sold the ring for big money sounds like a beauty. Tried to get a license for one near Casino in Conn. it would have cost over 10000 dollars in pribe money and sheriff wanted 3,000dollars a month. to put in his personal retirement account no way was I going to pay money then get busted and do jail time so I passed on deal.

I have two of those but both are maxed out at this time. I really need to get that shit paid off.

@Dominator---Yes, it's definitely a crooked industry. From what I have heard, it is extremely difficult to open a pawn shop in vegas. You need deeeeeep pockets and have to pay a lot of juice.
