    Gambling With Prison Time
For some reason this was interesting to me today, because it's like such a gamble if you lose.

So I was seriously talking to a guy today, and he claims a 16 year old girl made up a story that he tried to finger her. He was arrested obviously, but offered a plea of 5 years probation and be registered as a sex offender. Since he is innocent (according to him), he denied that so he wouldn't be a registered sex offender, and lost in court.. He got 2 years and still has to register.

Even if you were innocent, would you take the chance of doing years in prison. Obviously innocent people do get wrongly accused. I really think I'd just take the probation even if i didn't do it if there was a fierce penalty otherwise.

well, from what i hear people always know what your in prison for. If you go to prison for child molestation your going to get rapped yourself maybe even killed. So id do all i could to stay out of prison for that reason. If that means pleading guilty to something i didn't do i would do it.

Depends where I'm living. But I'm leaning no.

in a situation like that, if it's true it's messed up either way but I'd probably take the plea I guess.

No Idea.. he claims he's innocent. He's not like a friend or anything. I constantly talk to people that do the most insane things, so this is sorta normal.

How could you be convicted of such a thing on the basis of an unsubstantiated "made up" story?

Story doesn't make sense unless there was more in the way of evidence against him.

the cops/jury system always do that.....they give you like 3 charges or pleas so you have to admit guilt to one of them or you are fukd! whether you did it or not, the only way out of anything is to admit guilt......say they go to arrest you on something you didnt do they will add trespassing assault disturbing the peace all kinds of charges so that when you go to court they say listen we will drop all of this if you take a disturbing the peace and its a 50 fine and probation or something like that.....or you could fight it cost you 10k in lawyer fees and alot of time and court just to prove you were right. everything they do now is a total catch 22.

that guy was offered a way out with no jail! think about it say you are fuked up enough to do something like that....if you were guilty you would take the plea and get out of jail.....he was probably innocent just going out of his way to try to prove he was not guilty.

I went on a tour in a Mexican prison today and the guard asked me if there was corruption in Canada like there is in Mexico...

This was after telling me that most people in Mexican prison are innocent... but poor. They can't afford a lawyer so they have to wait in prison until they are proven innocent because they are guilty until proven otherwise. Basically, Mexico doesn't care to find the right suspect... they just need a suspect to quiet public disdain.

He also told me that money talks above everything else... So you can always buy your way out. And if you are really rich, you can actually pay people to serve your sentence for you. The going rate is about $750,000 USD per 5 years... but you get benefits like a sweet cell to yourself with cable tv and other luxuries... They also send you a girl once a week. Not bad if you have nothing else going for you.

I know it sounds outrageous but this is just the way it is in some countries. Weigh the risks versus the benefits and make a logical and rational decision.

Final note; their prisons are not as bad as you think. Actually quite respectable.
