It's not a good word. A spin off of retarded just like some of the others are off the n word.

Seriously I was in shock for a while because 1. never in a million yrs would I try to offend anyone to that degree and 2. the person who pulled me up on it you both would know as a pretty foul-mouthed individual when he was posting here. But I talked to a few moms about it and I was wrong... simple as that. My usage of the word was light years away from what others might use it to mean... but I guess that's the point... when you use it, you have no idea whom you might offend. Like I said, I still have a lot to learn. But I'm trying.

Shari You need to relax a little... when I was growing up with my friends... 9-12 years old... playing football etc... we use to say and do some dumb sh#$... we used the word "SPAZ" a lot. We never got offended. The was one of our main words.

No one is perfect in life. We all have issues... but... words really don't mean anything. It's all in just comedy. It's never used to maliciously hurt anyones feelings.

I've never heard 'spaz' used in any way to describe a mental illness, disease or defect. This is the first time that I've heard that it's also used derogatory. Regardless, you can't please everybody, and I'm not going to change my vocabulary because it might offend somebody. People seem to care WAY too much what other people think.

Its not that people use the words like gay or retarded, its that people use is as a derogatory term. It leads people to view those groups with a sense of superiority. i think its pathetic of our society that we accept these terms to be commonly used, but people would have an out roar if somebody used black, mexican, christian or religious as words to describe things they didnt like.
Then again, most people who use these words instead of actual words with negative meanings are just uneducated. It is still pathetic though.
