I always carry a knife but that's having to get to close so I usually have my Ruger LCP close by.

Tactical Flashlight
Small handheld high intensity tactical flashlight. Slightly longer than a roll of quarters. Has the same effect of holding a roll of quarters when you punch. The bright light blinds your opponent (even in the daytime). They have scalloped edges around the lense that are very effective at taking chunks out of your opponents skin (they can even be sharpened if you want to). It's a tight beam so it's effective from 10' away (maybe more).
A quick flash in your opponents eyes and they only see a big dot in front of them. At that point feel free to kick their ass or flee.
Legal to carry just about anywhere. I've even brought it on a plane in my carryon bag. You can buy a three pack at costco for like $20.

I must say, taking it onto a plane, I just think they missed it. Cuz I don't think flashlights are allowed on planes. Are they?

They are nice knives but aside from a gun, I'd would not be apprehensive taking my flashlight up against any other weapon.

Why has nobody mentioned samurai sword?
The Japanese fought off the Mongols the second time because of this. It was good for close range combat, and they learned their lesson from the first invasion where they could've used this.

I'd take my flashlight against either of the two weapons above if I had to choose any weapon other than a gun (or a bow and arrow). So frickin bright you'd have a big spot in your eye even if you were wearing sunglasses. Can't hit what you can't see. Can't defend against what you can't see. One blow to the forehead and now it's the blood that blinds you instead of the light.
Although I would shy away from a trained master with a samarai sword. But then again he would shy away from me as well as any master would see the inherent disadvantage.

Lookingtostart - the Japanese defense against the Mongol invasion had nothing to do with the Samarai sword and everything to do with the fact the Mongols lost significant forces due to stormy conditions at sea (more than 50%). The fact that Japan was an island is what spared them from Mongol hordes. Mongols strenths were horsemanship and archery. They were deadly archers from the saddle. Hard to be that way when you need to sail to a place and conquer. Especially considering the Mongols were not sailers.
Were the Japanese landlocked the Mongol horde would have swept them over like a tsunami. And would have in the second invasion were it not for the typhoon that sunk a majority of the Mongol fleet (who were using flat bottom river boats instead of keeled boats to reach Japan).
Learn your history dude. And not from Japan. Go to their war museum in Tokyo and you can see a monument that commerates their victory in WWII.
That said, in the hands of a master the samarai sword is very formiddable combat weapon if space allows. But I'd still take my trusty little tactical light instead.
