Reformat the thing. Over time, your computer probably collected a bunch of malware that hogs all of your CPU and RAM. That stuff is way too hard to clean up if you are not a security expert.

I've had my computer for 7 years now and it runs as fast as the day I got it. I reformat the thing every few months to keep it clean. All my files are stored on an external hard drive.

Aside from that, you can always add more RAM to your system.
