Are there any fire fighters here at SBR???
I need some advice... I want to become a fireman.

what do i need to do and what do I need to know? what will I be asked to do in the year long process it takes to get the job?

Also I heard there is some sort of mechanical test I have to take is there anything good that I can read to prepare my self?

any tips advice you guys can give would be great. I have been in sales and I think i am ready for a career change. Sales beats me up mentally. I hate making commission only.

i use to want to do this. i looked into it. get a book to study for the test, its easier if you become an EMT (paramedic) first.

My uncle is a firefighter in Montana and a good friend is a firefighter in Portland, OR. I only bring up both examples because both examples required completely different steps to become a firefighter. In my uncle's case, he had to get his bachelor's degree, get certified, etc., to become one. In my friend's case, the Department preferred to train you themselves, though getting a related degree wouldn't hurt, they felt that it prevented you from adjusting to the way they like things done. The best advice that I could give you is to call/ go down to the firehouse and ask the guys for yourself.

        stage a house fire...

run in and rescue those inside...

they will see your heroism and hire you...

You need some decent grill skills. Brush up on the latest Bass fishing techniques also. A bit of nascar knowledge won't hurt. Finally, have a bro-in-law who is already working for the department.

If you aren't white.....just get your FF I/II certs and your EMT-B license

If you are white...Get your certs and EMT-P license, join the military, or get a college degree in Fire Tech

Can you lift 100 lbs? And are you taller than 5'-9"? If not don't even bother.

Keep your sales job, volunteer as a fireman for 2 years, then you might get considered. Take fire/emt night classes for the next 2 yrs also.

I finished the trainingdivision.com course in april, you get nfpa certs for firefighter 1&2, haz awareness and operations. Cheapest way to go and you you get same certs or better as any other pre- service school. You do the theory online at your own pace, than do a 2 week bootcamp in texas. Im in ontario thats the only qualifications required at most depts. Volunteering in your community, and medical related courses are a must on the resume too. Check out their website. Tons of fun the boot camp was too.

Alot of depts dont require certifications to apply when they have their recruitment drives. But your usually up against 1000-2000 other applicants, and 75% probbally have their certs,
                      when you write the dept.
Tests its usually math, mechanical, memory and
                      situational questions. Look
up norman halls firefighter exam preperation book, study it and you will pass with flying colors. Cheers

The books will have all the answers ya need, alot of the mechanical stuff is based on math equations ie..pully systems and their
mechanical advantages, easy stuff, just need to memorize formulas. The boot camp is kinda like a military style camp. Your based in a station and all the students basically take responsibility for all the cleaning, chores after class is let out for the day, you would be spending alot of time studying for the daily tests in the morning prepping you for the state exam on the last day. The instructors are drilling you when your doing all the practical stuff and they are strict, lots of pushups when u screw up. But they make sure u know your shit. Daily practical stuff are things like auto extrication, ventilition techniques hose lays, ladder usage etc, etc. There are 2 burn days at the end of the camp where everything comes together, they use a burn building off site, if u go try to go in the cooler months, the heat is something else in texas, i was there in april and it was already 40 degrees celsius, your in your gear all day and in and out of fires, be in shape too you will need it.

Call local armed services recruiter, inquire about that as a job after bootcamp. I'd advise Naval firefighter on an ACC. Don't know MOS off hand, but recruiter will tell you.

My freind is State of California firefighter. A fireman job is not a typical job because have to remain at thé fire station for weeks, flip side, you also get a ton of days off.
