Any Car Guys Or Mechanics Here...
Maybe Deuce can help . So I need to get a smog check done on my 98 Ford Taurus (yeah whatever, got it for $500 with new tires) and anyways I noticed I have a leak so figured I should get a tuneup done but didn't think the leak was bad. However, I take it to the mechanic and what I get from what he is saying is that my coolant is leaking and he says I needed to get the head gasket repaired or w/e and the job would be $1200. I don't fukkn have $1200 to spend on my $500 car. The only reason I am gettin a tuneup is so I can pass smog. I don't think my car will pass if there's any leaks. I looked online for head gaskets that are fukking up and it says there is smoke coming from exhaust, etc etc but my car drives fine.

Any suggestion of what I should do? I was thinking of just trying to get some of that goop you pour in the coolant that supposedly stops the leaks Need to get car smogged and pay for registration by September 8th so I need to get this done soon. BTW I live in CA so not sure if prices where you live are different for repairs.

A little follow up: Previous owner got tuneups done every year before I had it at Ford dealerships. I have had this car for 4 years now and have had basic maintenance done on it, brakes, oil change, etc but no tune ups.

Take out the new tires and sell them and then sell the rest of the car for parts.

you might as well fix the head gasket. should be able to get it done for 600. shop around for a mechanic who works for a chain to do it on the side in his off hours.

used radiator stop leak in my 84 voyager, stopped the head gasket leak and the car ran like a champ, had it flushed for a while afterwards and ended up needing a new water pump about 6 months later but water pump was cheap and easy to replace

I had a Taurus back in the day and the older ones are notorious for their poor radiators. There is one of two things that you need to do. First, you need to see if its the original radiator or if it has been replaced, if at all possible. If you think it's been replaced, you then to see if it's an aftermarket radiator and if so, if it was made in china or elsewhere. The only reason that ******* this out is because even if the radiator was replaced recently, but was made in China, they tend to deteriorate fairly fast. Also, since you purchased the Taurus, have you ever had it flushed?

I would have to look over all the documents from the previous owners usage, but I'm pretty sure it hasn't been replaced before so it's the same one that it came with when purchased. I will look into it though. Also, no I have not had it flushed. I actually put some more coolant in it yesterday but will ask my neighbor what they recommend because he works on cars I believe. After talking to him, I'll get back to you. I was just thinking of trying one of those coolant leak stoppers to see if that would work.

Head Gasket is the worse thing that could happen... It's when the Coolant enters parts of the engine... typically you need an oil change and sometimes a flush after a blown head gasket repair. Toss the car... you could probably find a car for $1,200 somewhere.

                                                best advice: junk that crap!

bought a taurus myself and gaskets blew 500 miles later which caused coolant to leak in to the cylinders. paid $700 to repair but a month later the engine completely died.

fords are junk and once they start having problems they are a money pit. my parents once spent $5k repairing their taurus cause there was a problem every week.

only buy hondas, toyotas and nissans now. no problems whatsoever.

its tough to make a call without actually seeing the car. Do you trust this mechanic that said it was the head ? has the car overheated at all?

Okay guys, a little update here:

So I decided just to take it try to get smogged thinking if it doesn't pass then at least I'll know and can take it back for some free retests. However, it passed on the first try and the guy says the numbers were pretty average. Before I did this, I went to Auto Zone to buy a can of Bar's Leaks Block Seal Permanent Head Gasket Fix and will keep that around to fix the leak if I need to. The car has never overheated, no smoke coming from tailpipe, runs fine to me, only problem is that leak. Thanks for ur suggestions
