are there steps you must follow to owning one?

I bought mine at Academy(Sports + Outdoors) about 5 years ago. A Beretta Px4 Storm for around $500. They do a background check on you - more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...d_Check_System That's about it.

You can buy online.
I'm not sure exactly how each state works and if they differ.
Illinois, you need a FOID card. Apply for that, receive that, go buy a gun at a store. Got my guns from Gander Mountain.

gunbroker.com cheap. you have to pay a special fee to get ti shipping to local dealer but you still save lots of money. I bought a gun. had it two years and sold it for what I paid for it to a gun store. I currently own a 1911 Colt .45 and a .357 Taurus revolver. GL!

just gonna agree/disagree with 2 things.
agree: buying online. find a gun shop in your area and explain to them you want to ship a gun to them. they'll probably charge you $20 and they'll do the background checks in their shop when you come to pick it up. just go onto any gun site and pick out one you like and ship it to the dealer. easy peezy.
disagree: gander mountain. soooo overpriced. if that's your only option or don't feel comfortable in anything but a large national chain, sure go ahead. but be warned, their pricing is much higher than anywhere else.
google or use your phone book for shooting ranges around your area and head to one. it gets pretty easy after that.

Go to the gun show and buy it from the private seller (no background check) because one day idiots in Washington will pass a bill that will forbid private citizens owning guns and feds will knock on your door to take it away from you.

yes, going 'to the gun show and buying from a private dealer' is a must, eventually.

Not bad when you have a Gander Mountain CC that you spend around 10K on a month through work and get lots of cash back. Plus once in a while they'll have a nice sale, where you can get things for a "decent" price.
But yes a guy that we buy our tools from swears by gunbroker, and uses them quite often, and hasn't had any problems.
Everyone should have to take a mental capacity exam. But the rules are different in every state. Best of luck.
357 is one of my personal favs

I collect guns and I am always buying and selling them. My latest purchase is a Micro Galil Israeli Assault Rifle.... It's a fine piece!

Buy most of mine at Cabela's. If you watch the sales they are usually cheaper than the "local" place.

I have one I stole from a policeman, I have used it a lot of times to kill bastards. I can sell it to you for a good price.
It has been cleaned everytime it was fired, and I took out the serial number from it.
