That's what I do....When they have it on sale it's tough to pass up buying it. 6/1qt bottles of fully synthetic for low 20 bucks...I think I got 4 cases last time.

The big-box electronic stores are the worst. 40, 50 yards of impluse-buy items to snake around until you finally reach check-out.

IT'S FUKKIN IMPOSSIBLE.
Walk by the electronics section and tell me you can get out of their without the purchase of something. Whether it be a stupid fukkin SD Card for your camera, a USB flash drive, or a fukkin new computer. Don't even need to mention going over by the meat section, you're guaranteed to pick up at the least some Steaks and most likely whatever the fukk they are sampling.

Costco really isn't that cheap unless you buy stuff in major bulk, at least in my area

I don't personally have this problem, so I'll describe what I do in case my method is the reason why:
(1) I make a shopping list that I gradually ad to over time, usually on a torn piece of paper but sometimes something more formal / less ghetto.
(2) I make myself shop (usually just groceries) once weekly, unless special reason.
(3) I often buy more than what's on my accumulated list but typically not greatly more, relative to the amount/number I planned on buying.
(4) If I'm missing or run out of something important before my next planned trip, I'll usually already have a list of other important stuff to buy on the trip, or I'll wait a few days if it's not something critical.
I think a one-sentence conclusion would be that I'm being planful enough to avoid over-spending for the most part. I'm curious if this is useful to anyone, so do me a favor and reply to this if you've found it so, either right away or over the next few weeks, KTHX ^_^
