It is because they had no surname when slaves, when they jumped the farm, they took common American surnames. Johnson, Smith, Jackson, Jones, etc.

Most Irish-Americans did not get here until long after slavery was over. Because the Irish were of similar economic status to the blacks when they got here (many stores had signs along the lines of "Help wanted, no negroes, irish need not apply".) there were a great deal of irish-black couples.

Most of the super anglo names are in fact "slave names" but when a black person has an Irish, Jewish, or German (sometimes) last name it often came to them the traditional way.

Yeah, the Irish didn't own any slaves. The surnames taken there were all English and named after prominent Americans (Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, etc).

A LOT of black people have Irish names, and they go way back. Some came over during the potato famine, since a lot of blacks were over there working. The rich stayed, the poor (farmworkers black and white) were starving and came over. This is why you see those Irish surnames on black people a lot more in the north than the south.
