There is a hardwired need to reinforce one's superiority (or the other's guy inferiority) to justify passing along our genes procreating sons. So, it is natural to identify oneself with a successful man, as both share the same race, religion, nationality, etc.

I think this is the seed of most behaviors, human or animal.
