IMHO this was a great pick. Aldon Smith is a smart man, "a character guy with huge upside" in the parlance of the NFL. Harbaugh will, in the end, prove to be an excellent evaluator of talent, I think. Indeed, it's talent evaluation that makes a place like Stanford competitive. And Harbaugh, in contrast to (at least) the last three SF HCs isn't looking to see where the cameras are. He's interested in building a legacy of winning, not a legacy of ESPN sound bites. That, at least, is how it appears now. Let's hope it's true. I want the 49ers back. Badly.

That being said, Gabbert is the most overrated QB I've seen in a few years and Aldon will destroy some QB's. The guy's upside is limitless.

It's a good pick. Smith had a lot of upside and is a good pick for a team that could have used him...besides, if I'm Harbaugh, the first number I would have dialed when I was hired was Alex Smith's, telling him that I actually know how to coach and I'll turn him into a player. I'd be having A. Smith back and coaching the hell of that kid...he can be a real player.
