Well I haven't had a problem, all I do is create a new account, but I'm not livin in the states maybe that's why donno... but Im already on my 3rd user. yeah it has been down since last weds. heard it should be back up tomorrow (tues) night...heard sony is worried that the guys that hacked the system have gotten some users cc numbers and what not...

The rumor is that some hackers discovered how to turn the machine on in development mode, and found that Sony wasn't verifying the actions of users in dev-mode. Allegedly, they started pirating everything in the Sony store (by sending fake CC numbers in place of a real one), and Sony was afraid that the access they already had (they were in a secured network) would allow them to retrieve CC numbers and other user information. They shut it down as a preventative measure to stop it from getting worse, and are rebuilding the servers now.

I still think that GeoHot, the guy that hacked the PS3 on his own, is involved with this group.

He is not. Anonymous has already denied these attacks, but it's possible someone who isn't in the core group is responsible.

anon didnt do it...there was a firmware hack where you could download psn games for free without paying....the only way for sony to prevent this was to completely rebuild a whole new network, which will take some time...sony is dropping the ball though in terms of updating consumers

You can download psn games for free by simply friending someone who has whatever psn game you want.

Sony doesn't care about that. They did this because they have to patch holes in their network. Simple stuff, really.

This is serious shit, check your credit report and make sure you're monitoring it, if you have a CC number on file with sony. Your identity and personal information could be stolen or compromised because of this bullshit!

My 360 f**ked me up the red ring about 2 months after the warranty expired so they wouldnt replace it, so I bought a PS3 - so far not had any issues, and luckily rarely play it online so this lot hasnt affected me too much.

Though I did hear rumours that CC information "may" have been stolen - hoping this is just paranoia, but will be keeping a close eye on my bank details !
