usually 7 weeks in advance is the best time to purchase. You may be coming up on that time now if you're traveling late-may early june, so the sooner the better probably.

Earlier is usually the better option. If you're traveling with someone, you will be able to get your choice of seats.

The day of the week when you book (as well as day of travel) is also very important. I planned a trip to Hawaii last year in Oct and noticed consistently that plane tickets were cheaper Monday and Tuesday, sometimes as much as $75-100 cheaper. Watch for these trends daily. Traveling on non peak days and non peak hours will also result in cheaper tickets. Mon-Wed will always be the cheapest days and early morning or late night will always be cheaper than mid-day. Use Kayak to check for ticket prices and get alerts for lowest fares.
