2. Mexico got it's ass kicked in the Mexican-American war and agreed to give up California as part of the "Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty". The U.S. kicked in 15 million to make them feel a bit better about not only losing California, but to soften the humiliation of the beating.

Winner = United States (not only gaining Texas & California, but THE GOLD RUSH that began in California after the beatdown resulting in RICHES)
