#10No opinion.
The artist gets screwed out of alot of money. Sure 100,000 cd's may sell, but then again 100,000 get downloaded as well.
But who wants to pay 15 bucks for a cd anymore.
Who wants to pay 15-20 bucks for a movie, when they are all available for free online, before the DVD is out in stores.Comment -

#11If the artist or record/video game companies could figure out a way to squeeze a couple extra bucks out of us they would. Is that right or wrong?
Back in the late 80's, early 90's they we're charging $18 dollars for a cd. And now they act righteous when they're the ones getting fuked.Comment -

#15I'd have voted for it's complicated if that was an option.
Looking at the music industry for example record sales may be down but grosses from concerts are way up. Having music readily available (for free or cheap) now serves to drive demand for concert goers. Listeners are no longer limited by their local radio station and network of friends to be exposed to new music, broadening bands listeners.
Personally, I download music and don't feel bad about it. I've always spent a certain amount of my disposable income on music, either live or recorded, and I don't think this percentage has changed now that downloads are available. But I certainly get exposed to more and my spending is much more broadly distributed.Comment -

Exactly, thank god for torrent sites, haven't had to buy/rent a movie in years, that along with software/music/and single player games....
I still spend alot on movies though, I like going to the theater and I still purchase multiplayer games on Steam.Comment -

#18It has ruined the concept of actually paying money for music, especially a CD. As an Independent musician myself, I hate file sharing. Spending lots of time and money recording, and releasing an album almost isn't worth it anymore. I have literally thousands of unsold CD's that have been sitting around for years.Comment -

#19It's a tough one; I put it somewhere in between 'totally ethical' and 'outright theft'. Take this example: you have an iPod with say, 100 albums on it, all of which you pirated. If the ability to download the albums for free wasn't there, would you have bought all of them? Unlikely. Most of them you probably would've just made do without. Instead of taking your iPod to the gym, you might take a Walkman radio, like in the old days. A handful of the albums on the iPod you probably would have bought - in those cases, it's essentially theft.Comment -

#29I just said file sharing era ruined the concept of paying money for music in general. That includes all of the technology to easily steal music. My album is available on many sites like napster and spotify. Those sites allow you to stream the song for a less than pennies. I know for a fact plenty of people are likely streaming my album on there while simultaneously recording it on to their PC's as mp3's (quite easy to do). I have access to my digital sales stats and can put 2 and 2 together. So instead of paying $5 or $6 for a CD or album MP3 download of the album, they stream/record my album and get it for less than 10 cents, and I literally make like 2 cents off of the stream of the album. And even that has a chain effect, if they have a buddy who is interested in the music, they just burn a copy of it onto a CD-R for them, and there is yet another lost sale.Comment -

Sell your cd's for $10 bucks a pop at your gigs. If they don't sell at your shows, or if you don't do shows then you got no one to blame but yourself.
Historically, artist never made that much from albums sales unless they had lots of clout and could demand a better deal. They mostly made their money touring and through merchandise.Comment
